Incredible "hidden" prologue to still wakes the deep. Very engaging way to jump into the narrative in total immersion.

"Oil Strike '75" is a student project from Sumo Academy, an outreach educational institution in the UK. One of the first things students should be taught in game development is that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D cards like the Voodoo3 and the ATI Rage. But the students were deliberately mistaught that's it's okay to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era of gaming... certainly any professional developer seeing a prospective new hire who doesn't even know about 3D gaming probably isn't going to give them a job. This is a collection of Atari-esque minigames from Sumo with a nautical/environmental theme. The minigames aren't great... there's a reason Atari isn't selling 2600's anymore. As far as retro gaming goes, they got the resolution right (it's awful) but got the colours wrong so it doesn't actually look authentic... that's a fail. We also have to question what value there is for gamers on Steam when institutions flood the store with low quality 2D video game homework assignments... sure, it might make the students feel good about themselves, but this has no benefit for gamers who have to wade through this stuff to find professionally made 3D games. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. It would be unethical for students to try charge money for their homework assignments, so you don't have to pay any money for this. But you'd still have to spend your time downloading this, and "time is money", as they say. Now, you might see paid DLC but this is for charity... and there's another problem, I guess. While it's probably not so unethical, at the same time, gamers shouldn't be getting charity or beggarware thrust upon us like this. It's an annoyance, to say the least. There's the other problem, too... as a student project, this wasn't made for gamers. There's no requirement for them to polish and balance the game properly, all they need is something to show the faculty so they can get their grade and move on. Let's once more ask... why is that good for gamers? It's obviously not delivering a solid product. Yet here it is, on the store page, and here you are, reading my review for a student demo that's going to waste your time. While genuine amateur developers who made real products get ignored because they have to compete with this stuff. In some ways, this deluge of student projects on Steam is harmful to everyone. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 130 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB shows this peaked at just a dozen or so concurrent players, and now there's basically nobody playing it. Even though it's free, that was a dismal public reception. But if you take into account the problems I bring up in this review, it's easy to see why gamers rejected it. Keep in mind this student project won't increase your game collector count or show up in your Steam profile showcases, and because it's a short, unpolished and unmaintained student homework assignment, I can't recommend you spend your valuable time on this one when you could be playing any of the thousands of fully made games for gamers. Remember what I often say... if you don't agree with what I've said about this game, by all means add it to your library and play it. My review is just here to inform your decision, and if you think I was wrong and you downloaded the game, then I've done what I really wanted to do... inform your decision.
this is alright for a few minutes, but its extremely lazy even for a free game, and not as fun or interesting as most of the reviews are making it out to be. only the helicopter minigame is actually fun, the other two just get more frustrating as they go and mainly due to unresponsive controls or poor level design. i did not reach the easter egg at the end because i did not want to play a single additional second of the sonar or mario vs donkey kong style games. there is a serious lack of QOL since this was probably made in a couple of days. no WASD controls on a pc game in the 2020s is just idiotic, the up key does nothing in the jumping game, yet it's how you fly higher in the helicopter game. there is no way to restart a level without just dying, you can press esc to exit the full screen mode and see a largely useless decorative retro UI, but pressing it again does not return to the full screen view, and the game is not centered in the decorative one. you use mouse controls for the decorative ui, but they do nothing in game. the game does not have an exit button. power on/off does nothing, the reset button does nothing. why would you expect me to play something that i have to force quit to close by design????? no explanation is given for anything for the most part, even when the game opens, it literally just says "continue". not "press any key to continue", you can't click on it, you have to press space. even if this was basically a free little game jam type deal, it's more like a very lazy and incomplete effort and given the level of simplicity here it would take them literally a day to patch this into a more playable state, or give us the opportunity to just skip some of the minigames and earn our points by completing the others more times. i was literally only here for lore explanations since the full game is exceedingly vague, but you are better off watching the last minute of a let's play rather than wasting your time with some of these minigames. oil strike '75 feels like the studio's cheap attempt at patching their unfinished story board, and they could at least have made it more playable.
Симулятор управления нефтяной платформой в сеттинге 1970‑х: игрок выполняет задания, развивает буровую установку и исследует глубины океана. Игра — официальный приквел к Still Wakes the Deep.
A fun collection of games with it being tied nicely with it being a teaser game to Still Wakes The Deep. Not super significant, but fun nonetheless.
Cool little game full of easter eggs and a great teaser
Such a fun little game, the actual computer game elements with the chopper, derrickman and boat took me back to Atari 2600 era! Loved the part after that too where you're on the computer console, different experience but fun and cool to tackle too. :)
Набор разных мини-игр с закосом под старые приставки, кто в детстве играл в Денди что-то похожее вспомнит.
Frickin awesome freebie. The three atari style minigames are fun enough, but twist at the end ties the experience together really nice. I'll have to check out the game this is a prelude to.
