I recommend to play the demo first. I feel OK supporting the effort that went into this, but TBH I felt I wasted my time. It made a bad first impression on me - the game opens in a small 3D hub with moveable camera and movement you can control, then moves to the first "level" which abruptly switches to fixed camera 2D and introduces some "charge to jump" mechanism, after which you're dropped into a simple maze (which your very slow movement speed turns into a 4-10 minute swamp), then the first of the 3D platforming sections. I've given the game 3 tries and it just *feels bad* to play, personally. From the screenshots there are parts of the game I want to see and experience, and I don't think I will. There will be some people who literally don't reach the first check point, and just from the achievement stats, not many people are getting hooked enough to go far. To me there are design flaws that make this a non-starter. I respect that someone made and presumably enjoys this, I would be very proud. But there is so much here that the potential audience is not going to experience. If you're familiar with some of the very challenging "hidden gem" games from the past decade, they fundamentally *feel good* to control. This is slow, floaty, unintuitive timings without signals to help players learn, and a rough early game . I hope somebody loves it and I am the one who is wrong.

OBEN is a demanding indie platformer that leans heavily into precision, repetition, and the satisfaction that comes from mastering difficult mechanics. It frames its experience within a light science fiction premise, following a stranded protagonist and an AI companion navigating a strange and fragmented system of alien worlds. While the narrative provides a loose sense of direction, the game’s primary focus is clearly on gameplay, using its setting more as a backdrop than as a central storytelling device. The core of the experience revolves around tight, unforgiving platforming that requires careful timing and consistent execution. Movement must be deliberate, with jumps and positioning often needing to be nearly perfect in order to succeed. The game does not rely on complex control schemes, but instead builds its challenge through level design, placing hazards and obstacles in ways that demand precision. As players progress, the difficulty steadily increases, introducing more intricate layouts that test both reflexes and memory. Success often comes only after multiple attempts, reinforcing a trial-and-error approach that defines the overall rhythm of the game. Each environment presents variations in layout and obstacle placement, giving the impression of progression while maintaining a consistent mechanical foundation. The game moves across several distinct areas, each with its own visual identity and structural quirks, but the underlying gameplay remains largely unchanged. This consistency helps players build familiarity with the mechanics, yet it also highlights the limited evolution of the experience. Rather than introducing entirely new systems, the game focuses on refining and intensifying the challenges built around its existing ideas. Puzzle elements are subtly integrated into the platforming, requiring players to think about movement sequences and positioning rather than simply reacting to obstacles. These moments add a layer of engagement, as players must consider not only how to execute actions but also when and in what order to perform them. However, the puzzles rarely diverge significantly from the core mechanics, meaning they feel like extensions of the platforming rather than distinct challenges. This keeps the experience cohesive, though it can also contribute to a sense of repetition over time. Visually, the game adopts a straightforward 3D style that emphasizes readability over detail. The environments are colorful enough to distinguish one area from another, and the layouts are clear, which is important for a game that demands precision. However, the presentation remains modest, lacking the level of polish or artistic depth that might make it more memorable. The audio design follows a similar pattern, offering functional sound effects that support gameplay without significantly enhancing the atmosphere. The most defining aspect of the game is its difficulty. It is unapologetically challenging, expecting players to learn through failure and persistence rather than guidance. This design choice creates a strong sense of accomplishment when difficult sections are finally completed, but it also means that frustration is an inevitable part of the experience. The balance leans heavily toward those who enjoy mastering demanding mechanics, making it less accessible to players who prefer a more forgiving or varied progression. In the end, OBEN is a focused and uncompromising platformer that delivers a consistent test of skill and patience. It does not attempt to broaden its scope with additional systems or narrative depth, instead committing fully to its core gameplay loop. For players who appreciate precision-based challenges and are willing to invest time in overcoming repeated failures, it can be a rewarding experience. For others, its repetitive structure and steep difficulty may limit its appeal. Rating: 7/10
