Pretty fun indie RPG with a feudal Japan theme.
One of the RPGMaker hidden gems I've played in a while. While the combat is just your typical RPG Mechanic, I like the smooth, cute visuals and the casual feel to it. It's engaging without me feeling lost or helpless whenever I'm stuck.
Fun gameplay, well made sprites and creator himself reacted to a message of me. Worth the money and also available as mobile game for android.

Nobunaga’s Shadow is a retro-inspired role-playing game developed and published by Ultaan Games that blends classic turn-based mechanics with branching narrative design set against the backdrop of feudal Japan. Built with pixel-art visuals and a deliberate, story-focused structure, it casts players as Ryuuei, a young ninja tasked with infiltrating the powerful Oda clan during a time of political instability. While rooted in historical inspiration, the game tells a fictional tale centered on loyalty, espionage, and the moral complexities of survival in a fractured land. The narrative stands as one of the game’s strongest pillars. Rather than following a strictly linear storyline, Nobunaga’s Shadow emphasizes player choice. Dialogue options and key decisions influence alliances, character relationships, and ultimately the ending achieved. Ryuuei’s position as a spy creates constant tension between duty and personal conviction. Players may choose to remain loyal to their original mission, sympathize with new allies, or pursue an independent path. These branching possibilities encourage multiple playthroughs, as different decisions can dramatically alter how events unfold and which characters survive or thrive. Gameplay adheres to traditional turn-based combat systems reminiscent of classic Japanese RPGs. Encounters are menu-driven and strategy-focused, with players selecting attacks, abilities, and items in a structured sequence. Character progression is handled through stat allocation, allowing customization of Ryuuei’s strengths in areas such as dexterity, resilience, and offensive power. As abilities unlock, combat gains subtle layers of strategy, though it remains accessible and straightforward. Battles are paced deliberately, supporting the narrative emphasis rather than overwhelming it with mechanical complexity. Exploration unfolds across towns, wilderness paths, and key political centers that reflect the era’s atmosphere. The world design favors compact but meaningful areas rather than expansive open maps. Interaction with non-player characters plays a critical role in uncovering quests and advancing the plot. Dialogue often carries hints about hidden objectives or alternate story paths, rewarding attentive players. The pixel-art environments evoke a nostalgic charm, using simple yet expressive visuals to convey the mood of a nation caught between ambition and upheaval. One notable element is the blending of RPG mechanics with visual-novel-style storytelling. Extended dialogue sequences and character-focused scenes allow emotional stakes to develop gradually. Themes of honor, betrayal, and personal identity are explored through both narrative events and player decisions. While the historical setting provides context, the story remains character-driven, centering on Ryuuei’s internal struggle as much as the larger political conflict. However, the game’s deliberate pacing and old-school design may not appeal universally. Its modest production values and traditional mechanics reflect its indie scope. Some players may find the exploration occasionally vague or the progression reliant on careful dialogue reading. The combat system, while functional and balanced, does not introduce radically innovative mechanics. Instead, it prioritizes familiarity and narrative integration over experimentation. Replayability emerges from its multiple endings and divergent narrative routes. Different decisions can lead to alternate alliances and story resolutions, giving players reason to revisit earlier choices. Although the overall length of a single playthrough is relatively compact, the branching paths extend its longevity. This structure aligns well with players who enjoy seeing the consequences of moral and strategic decisions unfold across separate runs. Ultimately, Nobunaga’s Shadow stands as a thoughtful homage to classic RPG design, enriched by meaningful player choice and historical flavor. It may not seek to reinvent the genre, but it offers a focused and emotionally engaging journey through themes of espionage and loyalty. For fans of retro pixel RPGs and narrative-driven adventures, it provides a satisfying blend of strategic combat and story-centric gameplay set within a compelling feudal Japanese backdrop.
