Updated my thoughts after beating the game and getting to DotW. I changed my review to positive as the NG+ experience and subsequent playthroughs made the game fun again. I still would not recommend this to anyone, but it's a rewarding game and a lot of work went into it to the point that it's very impressive. The skinny is that it's a very polished game with a lot of content, but it's also tedious, the fights take a long time which is boring, and it's very very complicated for a new player to pick up without guides. This is one of the only games I really REGRET playing blind, which never happens. A decent amount of game content is put in front of you but is also completely unusable until NG+. If you want a game that rewards skill, this is probably the best one in my opinion. If you want a game that has balanced and interesting weapons, this is also it. But for me the first playthrough was a long slog and not fun. Your miles may vary. In any case, it's a good game with a lot of combat variety that's choked by convoluted systems and decent bosses that are ruined by inflated health pools. There's so much tedious fluff like how your 600 item inventory fills up every few hours and you have to sort through it. NG+ and DLC were fun, I think the actual base game experience isn't very good as a new player. I played the game blind (because I like to play games without someone holding my hand or spoiling it) and beat it after about 80 hours or whatever and then watched an hour long youtube video and didn't even know half of the mechanics of the game. If that sounds fun to you then great, but there's so much STUFF you do it's annoying to me. You almost spend as much time in menus remodeling and tempering and soul matching and blah blah blah as playing the damn game. This game has a lot of depth which some will love, but I don't like spending literal hours reading and learning about various complicated systems. It's not that these things suck, but I don't like the time investment and hours later finding out you didn't do something that makes the game easier and then repeating that multiple times when you find out other stuff the game also doesn't teach you. That being said, the NG+ content is where the game becomes fun as you work on a build and start to really experiment with abilities while building up your weapons and armor sets. I don't think the base game is worth playing but it's awkward because NG+ is where the game becomes more interesting and fun. This game is both good and bad, I'm very conflicted. For example: the combat is amazing...for some fights...but not when you're spending 8 minutes chipping away a boss that can't possibly kill you OR when you're fighting an enemy that can block every single melee attack and you're spamming attacks against their guard until their ki breaks in 30 seconds and then repeating for a few more minutes. The 1v1 weapon mastery fights are amazing, some of the main mission bosses ARE really good. Others are terrible/boring.
I love collecting Kojimas
I bounced off this game twice before the combat really 'clicked' for me. After getting used to the various systems (and yes, Nioh has a LOT going on) and finding a weapon I enjoyed, this is fast becoming my favorite action game. You'll need to put in some sweat and blood to climb the learning cliff, but it's worth the time and effort if you enjoy challenging, fast-paced combat and the reward of progressing from rage-quits to no-hitting your way through levels.
