Just seems like fodder. The world is artificial and overwhelmingly populated with weird lackluster characters. Stick is a weird character, your run-of-the-mill autistic (I assume) enby with a weird tendency to talk to themselves and wear outlandish clothing. Overall, a sweet charming game that is plagued with fetch-quest after fetch-quest. Maybe i'll finish it some other time, games got some design choices that need to be re-thunk.

New Roots is an interesting, if tragically short, experience. Not in the sense of the way that its gameplay or level design flows, nor in the way that it presents its characters or themes. The nature of said characters and themes, however? I think in representing the concept of Solarpunk through a lens of a short narrative adventure, it manages to carve out a place for itself. The art is fantastic and the writing did occasionally get me to either reflect on current realities or chuckle out of whimsy, one time even due to a, somewhat surprising due to the aesthetic of the game, tonal shift of a mature-immature situation. In particular, however, I was intrigued with the way the game treats flowers. Of all the other objects in the game world, they draw the most reflection and information when interacted with. I think it's very fun to imagine that coming from the perspective of the main character, it feels genuine and I imagine it may reflect on somebody who wrote it and their own love of flora. This makes the experience feel somewhat rough around the edges, like somebody's first attempts at crochet. The flaws are rather clear but I find that, instead of detracting from the end result, they instead bloom into a kind of charm. The game may be clumsy with its message, it may not be the most innovative or interactive, its characters can feel flat and the world still ripe for exploration but I do greatly appreciate the fact that this game exists. That some people decided that something like this needed to exist - to express themselves, to have fun, to try and push a vision of the world that we could maybe live in, somewhat tinged in trauma and jaded hope, but hopeful nonetheless. It's a good experience. I liked it.
