Botley can't do many things on his own. Good thing he has telepathy.

Looks can be deceiving. Before I even say anything about the gameplay, Nena has the best ending I ever experienced in a video game (it's that special), make sure to watch the credits all the way, and please don't spoil it for others. The puzzle mechanics are very good, you can take control of the enemies and objects, and even redirect the projectiles in mid-air which creates some very creative gameplay. I also really enjoyed the narrative, I only wish it had more exploration because the way you can interact with the world is so fun. It's not very long, only about 60 minutes if you not grinding the achievements. I could go on and talk more about the game, but if you play it all the way, I think you will realize that making the game was probably not the most important thing ;). My heart... Just awwwwwwwwwwwww
Review By: http://store.steampowered.com/curator/31294838-Hidden-Gem-Discovery/
https://youtu.be/Svq5brwDYfk
A review copy was provided by the developer.

Follow my Curator page, Fruit N Doggie Reviews, so you can be updated whenever I post a new review.

Overall Rating - Painfully Bad ★☆☆☆☆

First Impressions
A game like NENA (NE), with so few reviews, typically doesn't interest me that much, even if they're all positive. However, the handful of reviews I saw on N seemed blown away by its ending, in spite of the game only taking about 60 minutes to beat. Heck, with the achievements in mind, it can actually be finished faster than that, in only about 19 minutes. Regardless, I was very intrigued, and wanted to find out what made it so special, or whether this was all being blown out of proportion. Having finished the game for myself, it's definitely the latter.
Gameplay
You play as a robot who doesn't have a lot of abilities, as all Botley can do on his own is dash. However, you're able to take possession of specific things. For instance, you can possess an explosive barrel, and fling it at enemies, or take possession of the enemy and make a traitor out of it to kill other foes. There's a few puzzles you'll finish this way, which mostly consists of moving an NPC onto a switch, or using enemy projectiles to hit buttons. It's a mechanic that's been used in other games, though it works well here, and doesn't have any confusing design or glitches that I noticed. However, it's not a very elaborate mechanic, so the gameplay doesn't change greatly from beginning to end. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2294681331
Controls
You have the option to play with either a keyboard or controller, and when I used the controller, I didn't notice any problems with the controls. This is in part because Botley has so few maneuvers, so the controls are pretty simple. One thing to know is that there's a cooldown before you can dash again, which is a hassle in the boss fights.
Story
NE is set hundreds of years in the future, in a world taken over by a business ran by robots. However, there's only a few times when the lore comes up at all, and considering how you see a very small sliver of what's going on, there's no way to know whether this is accurate or not. I found the tone to be inconsistent as well. Generally speaking, it's fairly grim with the amount of NPCs that are destroyed, while others are completely immobile. At the same time though, the two main characters get everything they would want, after destroying the monolith controlling the company, "Enjoy your lives, while everyone else suffers, you selfish pricks." https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2294681692
Visuals
It's hard for me to be positive about this, but I think the game's background are made up of square tiles. I'm basing this primarily on the outdoor environments, as the repeating designs of the grass and pathways look like a tiled floor. The game looks alright, but the enemy designs lack variety, with them consisting primarily of turrets that shoot different bullets. Other foes remind me of different colored gingerbread men. There's some differences in how they attack, yet it comes across as underwhelming when they're stamped out en masse.
Sound Design
The music has a very tranquil sound to it, and the strumming of a guitar or other stringed instrument is enjoyable. However, I don't think it suits this setting well, when it's supposed to take place hundreds of years in the future, and human beings might be wiped out. Maybe it'd work better if there was an undercurrent of dread or creepiness, to make the whole thing more unsettling. I'd say the sound effects are sufficient, without anything being ear grating.
Pros
🌟 The controls are straightforward and work well. Having to utilize the game's main mechanic to start the game serves as a simple tutorial or reminder. 🌟 I enjoyed some of the humorous moments in the writing, and felt bad for some of the NPCs. It's unfortunately not developed further.
Cons
❌ There wasn't a consistent logic behind the things you could possess. It's not only machinery, which could sensibly be seen as a wireless takeover of some kind. However, you can possess non-robotic items too, such as plants and rocks. This begs the question of why other bots can't do this too, as there's no suggestion that Botley is unique or special. ❌ Elements of the world are hinted at, but never explored. For instance, all the other inactive robots at the start of the 3rd chapter. Why are they all shut off, and why does Botley spuriously boot up without any outside intervention? ❌ If you're paying attention, most enemies are a non-threat. However, the sporadic movements of the first two bosses are significantly more dangerous. It makes for odd difficulty balancing.
Tips
🔍 When you take possession of anything else, your body is left immobile and vulnerable. Sometimes you aren't able to hide it away and make sure it can't be attacked, and will have to use good timing and quick reactions to return in time to dodge an attack. 🔍 If you attempt to go for the time-based achievements, you can turn on a timer from the options menu. This way you can see if you're on pace, or already missed the deadline.
Final Thoughts
Honestly, I don't see why the other reviews for NE hype it up so much. I can only guess how difficult it'd be to make a game as an indie developer, but by now, lots of other teams have done just that and put out something that takes more than an hour or two to beat. If I had to guess, most of this praise comes from the post credits scene, wherein the developer, who is a self-insert protagonist, includes a video clip of his proposal to his girlfriend. Considering how it has nothing to do with the game or its story, and that I don't even know these people, it's irrelevant. If nothing else, this unnecessary intrusion irritates me, as it's very reminiscent of social media making people think whatever goes on in their life is of interest to the rest of the world. I hate to break it to you, but most people don't want to watch a stranger's wedding proposal. Get over yourselves. Putting that aside, I find the game to be lackluster. The worldbuilding is meager, not delving deeply into its own lore or setting. Throughout the game, there's not much enemy or situational variety. It's a very short game, unless you grind for the achievements. After finishing your adventure, you're met with an abrupt ending that wraps nothing up. With nothing to make this game stand out, let alone for its asking price, I don't recommend playing NE. If you want to watch wedding proposals, do it for free on YouTube. At least then you're seeking it out, instead of having it shoved into your face. Very good, short, sweet game. Tight controls , pleasant art, fun levels, and great humor. This is the kind of game where the less is said, the better. Just enjoy what it has in store.
One of the cutest games EVER! <3 Best ending EVER, like American Beetle said!!! I simply had to play this through instantly because of their glowing review! I recommend playing this with the controller, like the game says; because I think one would have some difficulty playing otherwise, since aiming and moving is important. I found that the game has just the right difficulty! Was super fun to go about the puzzles and enemies! Plus, the dialog is so charming and lovely <3

A very well made short indie game! It's got great art, music, and gameplay, and an incredibly touching ending. Well worth the $5! Do yourself a favor and buy this game to spend a couple hours in a world where you can possess just about anything, and try to survive in a bullet hell where you can't shoot back!
This is a small game made by just a few people. It has a ton of charm and the pacing of the puzzles and story is spot on. I am very glad I gave this game a chance :)
Wow. I wasn't expecting that. I'm glad I found this. This was amazing. Definitely worth the buy. Fun the whole way through, you can play it in one sitting. Brilliant game. Brilliant story. Even better ending. Melted my hear!
Best of luck to you guys! You're so cute! Fantastic! Thank you for letting us be a part of your journey!
Firstly, I'd like to point out how I've never been compelled to write a review on Steam before, until now. Unlike most games released in the modern age, this game radiates a sort of passion that I have not seen in a very long time. Everything, from the moment Botley wakes up, until the final moments after the credits roll you can see (and hear) the passion that was lovingly poured into this game. I can see myself continuing to play this game more and more as time goes on because of it. CAUTION FOR SPOILERS AHEAD Keeping interest up while playing a game consistently is a tough thing to achieve in the industry for developers, especially for new Indie Developers. Which is why it is so impressive that Than was able to keep my interest high as the game went on. While yes, a big reason for this is that the games length is around an hour long, I mostly attribute it to the steady flow of varied enemies and new gameplay mechanics introduced as the game goes on. It is truly, truly impressive for a new dev to pull something like that off. You can't really tell at first glance that this game took as long as it did to develop (2 years) but you can really see it once you dive into the gameplay and mechanics this game has to offer. Every sprite, every level and every line of Dialogue (more on that later) has been carefully selected and created with so much care and attention. The length at which you can speak to characters is astonishing. (again, more on that later) AND...! OH. MY. GOD. UNBELIEVABLE. This is the only word I can think of to describe the MUSIC in this game. Every single piece of music was wonderful in this game, from the levels, to the menus, to the bosses and the theme for NENA herself. I would find myself stopping to just listen to the mad guitar skills of Jeremy Karem, the man credited with the music in this game. That brings me to the credits, where just by looking at the amount of names in the credits, you can really see the large number of people that you had consulted with to make this game. It really shows that, and I hate to sound like a broken record, the passion behind this project is mind boggling. "Hilariously Brilliant" is how I described the dialogue in this game to a friend, because that's what it is. I caught myself chucking to everything CAM said when I found "Howard," the secret area. The amount of little stories and jokes he said where hilarious, from the story about breaking into a building, to Horse Code, It was a genuine joy to find this. And that's just the thing, the amount of small secrets you can find throughout the game are great, even the hidden achievements feel like they've had care put into them, because they all have small references attached to them, especially the Achievement "I don't trust like that" which, for the sake of spoilers and it being hidden in the first place, I won't say how to get, but I will say that fans of The Eric Andre Show will definitely get a good laugh out this. Nonetheless, this game is amazing, and I genuinely hope it gets the attention and recognition it deserves. Thank you for creating this work of art.
It takes a lot to make me misty eyed with movies and games, but this one got me here :,) To start, this game has some of the smoothest controls I've used in a while. Botley's dodges are quick and help a lot during some of the harder boss battles, and the mechanic for possessing enemies is a ton of fun! I really love using the rockets in Level 3 in particular. Sooooooo satisfying! Next up, the music. Never has such relaxing music fit intense boss fights so well! I love the sound of the acoustic guitar in this game, it fits the cute visuals really well and is definitely a highlight of the whole experience! And finally, the ending. Oh my god that ending! I really don't want to give anything away as it's really something you need to experience for yourself, but what I'll say is that if it doesn't arise some form of emotion out of you, you're a monster :) All in all, for this price it's an indie title that's 100% worth picking up!
