REALLY FUN
I played a lot of the NFS games in my youth, and stepped away from the franchise as I got older. In that gap of time, it seemed like the series had a bad run of games after its earlier classics like Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted (2012) had made such an amazing impression on me. I didn't play those, so in my brain the series was still at its peak. And after finally coming back to NFS to play Heat, it felt like I was correct. Heat captures every bit of excitement and thrill I felt as a kid, and delivers tremendously. Its nighttime wanted system is genius, in my opinion, and makes encounters with the cops feel legitimately more tense and entertaining than anything the GTA series has to offer. The customization on display is impressive, and I appreciate that you can tune up a beater car into a monster if you like instead of always having the end goal be obtaining some hypercar. By the end of the game, I had take an old Mazda Miata and turned it into an absolute monster on the road; it being able to accelerate to 200 mph in just a few seconds and tackle corners like a tiny children's toy. Really, my only minor gripes with the game is the lack of extensive end game content and its misguided story- which wasn't bad but had the potential to tie in with gameplay better.
