Join private investigator Jack Pepper on a guns blazing, jazz-fueled adventure in MOUSE: P.I. For Hire. MOUSE combines the charm of hand-drawn rubber hose animation inspired by the classic cartoons of the 1930’s with the adrenaline and action of an explosive first person shooter.

I really like the animation art style that the devs worked so hard on and really gives off the vibe of old cartoons. The story was also something I was not expecting and really enjoyed going through it. Definitely give it a shot if you're still considering!
Highly recommend if you're looking for a good story FPS. Probably falls somewhere towards boomer shooter. Fantastic style, humor, music, and mechanics. Story took me about 20 hours on the Detective difficulty to do all side & main missions. Story was well paced and easy to follow.
Cuphead has a lot to answer for. The rubber-hose artstyle (so-called because everything looks so long and bendy) that was introduced to the world by the fantastic Felix the Cat still looks extraordinary to this day. It’s a beautifully unique and timeless aesthetic that we just don’t see enough of these days. That is until Cuphead came along. But the problem was that it did the whole thing with such perfection that any other game that attempted the art style was heavily criticised for not matching their standards. If only that Cuphead wasn’t so damn good, maybe we would have seen more of the aesthetic in recent years. Which brings us to MOUSE: PI for Hire, a film noir shooter that takes the black and white origins of Felix the Cat and blends it with the era’s detective mysteries. It looked great from previews, but would it capture that same magic when actually playing it? Many thanks to the publisher for the review code. BRIE CAREFUL WHO YOU TRUST Did you roll your eyes at that cheese-based pun? Well, you’d better get used to them as MOUSE: PI for Hire is full of them! The detective in this particular mystery is a mouse (if the title wasn’t enough of a clue) by the name of Jack Pepper who starts off by investigating a missing magician and ends up uncovering a plot that’s far bigger than he could have ever imagined. Taking you across a variety of locations and meeting many colourful characters, it really is impressive as to how much they’ve made the city of Mouseberg feel alive. It’s clear that a lot of care has gone into making this a believable world, despite the fact that the game contains very little actual detective work and predominantly focuses on shooting instead. After going into the game relatively blind, I was quite surprised to find that Jack’s role as a detective dissipates pretty quickly and you soon find yourself resolving conflict with a combination of your sidearm and a hefty foot. Whilst not as fast-paced as the likes of Quake and Doom, it still feels like a boomer shooter at heart. But that’s not necessarily a criticism, as the weapons are just as beautifully crafted as the environments and the game’s cast of characters. You’ll start off with a pistol known as the Micer, which doesn’t pack much of a punch but does a solid job at taking out weaker foes – especially those that have been stunned beforehand by a kick to the face. Soon after you’ll pick up a surprisingly effective shotgun and tommy (or in this game’s case, james) gun that you’ll soon find out can deal with more or less anything in the game with relative ease. You’d be forgiven for thinking that the game plays it safe with its arsenal, but it’s not long before things really get out of hand. There are ray guns, chainsaws, and even a very satisfying acid gun that literally melts the skin off your enemy’s bones. Very graphic, but the given the cartoon artstyle it comes off as more hilarious than horrific. My only real gripe with the weapons at your disposal is that none of them sound particularly meaty, which ends up making even the strongest arms feel weaker than they actually are. Thankfully there’s a lot more than shooting to help add a bit of variety during the twelve-ish hour playtime. There are a myriad of collectibles to find along your journey, including blueprints to upgrade your gun, baseball cards that can be used to play a minigame in the hub area, figurines, newspapers, and – of course – lots of cheddar (both the cheese and cash variet)y. A lot of it is hidden away pretty well, so you’ll have to destroy walls or use your upgraded moves to find it all if you’re an avid completionist. It’s a lot of fun, and that enjoyment is enough to help cover up some of the game’s issues. Aside from the audio design of the guns and some questionable default button mapping (which can be altered in-game, thankfully), there are occasional moments where things don’t quite work as intended. Perhaps an enemy will get stuck where they shouldn’t, or you’ll end up skipping a chunk of the stage because you’re a little bit too inquisitive. There’s nothing here that spoils the experience, but they’re certainly things you’ll notice along the way. But I didn’t care. Not only did the game look gorgeous and have some great gunplay, but it performs perfectly on the Steam Deck too. With sharp visuals and a consistently high frame-rate, this game is perfect whether you’re on the go or want to dock your Deck.

CARTOON-DOOM-NOAR 1. 7/10

Loved this game. I just beat the main story, the mechanics feel nice, the style of the game is awesome and had a nice story overall. Now it's time for the side missions 🔥
