What's with Western European people and weird ass peak RPGmaker games? Mothlight is a Lovecraftian horror inspired game which reminded me a lot of OFF by Mortis Ghost which I absolutely love. I do intend to check out the developer's other games now that I played this. Gameplay is standard rpgmaker stuff so you play for the story here, which I won't spoil. But the summary is basically - The plot revolves around Enzo, a "Feline" who was kicked down to the Black Sea, a infinite plane of dark water that turns any flesh it touches into metal. All sorts of criminals and scum from society is expelled so that they might become useful metals. Those that give into the despair become "Ferals" malformed monsters representing the original being's deepest and most twisted desires. I really liked the implications of real world issues with mental health such as the character of Idris, which I found myself relating to at times, and the main character, Enzo was also cool because cat ok. One of the major characters as said Idris, also reminded me a bit of Guts from Berserk or even kind of like Gael from Dark Souls with the large sword, attack patterns and his personality too. It's free on steam so you have nothing to lose by giving it a shot if you like these kind of games. Check it out!

LOVELY rpg. Deserves a LOT more attention.

I loved this game. The way it's drawn reminds me of Omori, that I adore. The story feels real and made me care about the characters and what happens to them, and the soundtrack made it all really immersive. The game kept me hooked from beggining to end.
Despite not recommending it i do think if your a person who likes weird rpgmaker titles you should still give it a shot. The game has genuine good parts to it that i think just barely don't outweigh the bad. The art is great and charming, when the game doesnt write itself into a hole it can express very interesting ideas, and i think even express those well. Eventually i do want to go through the creators other works because somewhere in this game there is something truly unique and interesting. now onto the bad. Unfortunately the game just feels overwritten especially in the second half. Rather then leaving thing up to the player it feels the need to repeat and clarify on things we could already pick up on especially bad for a work that deals with cosmic horror. The writing also has a recurring problem of trying to be dark but instead just being overly edgy, the ammount sexual assualt for example is brought up is just too much for how little the game genuinely wishes to handle it. I think that stems from the creator obviously being a big berserk/darksouls fan but i don't think they took the time to see how those dark topics are always framed or just the weight those topics bring, especially odd cause other forms of brutal edge like gore arent in the forefront as much, its still there but they arent nearly as brought up instead just usually staying in the background (or being accompanied by the SA). I don't consider the body horror in the same edgy camp as just raw gore btw. There is a lot of body horror but its handled much better. Beyond that the gameplay is just abysmmally bad, and while most people arent playing this for the gameplay i think the creator tried too much to not comment on it. The biggest problem is that rather then using random encounters or even experience they designed the game in that you only get gold from battles and their are a set ammount of encounters on the map that can not be repeated. So the only way to get stronger is by equipment which there isn't a lot of and most of it is given from bosses. So every normal encounter is skip able past the first parts of the game. Because there is so few piece of equipment you don't gain many stats over the games run, and so you ever fight is kept at the same very easy difficulty where you just mash attack or a dps skill. If they instead balanced around you gaining exp the player would be encouraged to engage with combat and do it more. while also potentially allowing more difficult and engaging fights because even if you are still always wearing your best in slot gear you may not be at the peak of your power for that point in the game. Lastly highly recommend turning down the volume there are some really bad songs and sound effects that get grating very fast.
