I had to force myself to finish this game unfortunately. There are some MAJOR issues that ruined my enjoyment thoroughly. While i can't say i didn't have fun at times, I did. Its just every bit of fun i had was also accompanied by even more pain and suffering. Ill outline my biggest Criticisms with the game and do with it as you will. - The Environments are extremely lacking in detail. Sure the textures look fine but most of the open world feels samey. Apart from the snowy region i cant tell you a time i looked at an area and was like wow that's unique, i cant wait to explore this area. More like, oh another forest/cave/swamp area i cant wait to fight the same 4 enemy types again. - Soundtrack is nonexistent? There's only like one track for combat and its engrained into my brain at this point. Overworld music is okay i guess. - Balance is abysmal. The game starts out great but once you reach Mammon and onwards, there's a clear drop in QA. Especially the endgame Area The Unfound Path. The same copy pasted enemies can go from one shotting you in the open world, to being a pushover in a random dungeon. Enemy HP pools are very inconsistent (and EXTREMELY bloated in Night Mode). Boss HP pools are even MORE inconsistent. It just feels to me nobody at the studio even bothered to play their own game past the demo. - Runbacks are worse than DS1. Beacon/Bonfire placement is DISGUSTING in some places, and in some areas you will have two beacons right next to each other? - Leveling your Harbinger feels bad. There is such a small gain when you level up you will never notice a difference. The only reason you level up is to get shell points. - Shell points are not guaranteed on level up - making some level ups feel useless. Hooray i got a +2% to my crit damage! You will struggle to make the build you want because you are constantly in the need of shell points. - Glimpses are very limited. You will only be able to max 3 shells in a playthrough and even that requires a SIGNIFICANT grind to do so. You cannot refund your glimpses so use wisely. - Gold and material requirements for weapon upgrades are also inflated to the point where you will only be able to have one weapon and sidearm maxed at a time. forcing you to reset your weapon if you want to experiment - which costs gloom to do (almost 10k if maxed) - Thought the issues only plagued weapon and shell leveling? Nope, tarstone leveling is even more cumbersome. You are forced to use trash tarstones you don't want to get materials to upgrade the ones you do want to use. and even those are extremely limited. So counterintuitive. - Enemy Animations are inconsistent and poorly telegraphed. Mid-Animation almost all enemies will lunge from large distances to close the distance on you, which not only looks out of place but it feels very cheap. This is the attack magnetism other reviewers complain about. It's especially annoying during runbacks to a dungeon or boss when you are trying to avoid enemies and spamming your dash and yet an enemy behind you lunges from miles away and locks onto your position and hits you. With elites sometimes this means instant death. - Most enemies including bosses have multi string combos that cannot be parried. You can parry the first hit of the string, but the others are going to either hit you or consume your poise when you block the rest. I'm not sure if this is intended? - They give you Three Seals to experiment with (Block, Harden, Parry) but the only one with a shred of viability in the late game is the Block seal followed shortly by harden (Which imo is only useful for the final boss to avoid his AOE attack). The infinite seal is useless as it has a long animation that you get stuck in making it impossible to follow up on multi string hits. - Some "Bosses" are just re skins of elite enemies - sometimes not even a reskin just a normal elite with a name above his hp bar. Or sometimes just a group of trash mobs with a boss hp bar at the top? Very lazy. - The intended bosses have wildly differing quality. Some have great design but poor mechanics, some are downright broken, most are forgettable. The Monolith and the Final boss were some of the most painful experiences I've had in a souls like to date. Soiled my perception of the game and made me not want to do new game plus. If you enjoy pain - Get this game. I believe with a few patches they can make this game enjoyable but for now id give it a 5/10. I beat it out of spite for the devs.
AS FINALIZAÇOES DESSE GAME ME SOLIDIFICARAM MAIS QUE O PERSONAGEM DO PRIMEIRO JOGO
PSA: Make sure you have the demo version still in your library when launching this if you want the bonus you get from playing that first. If you uninstall the demo, it automatically removes itself from your library, and the full release won't be able to scan your account and find it to give you the bonuses. You don't need to install the demo again though, literally just have it in your library. Actual thoughts on the game: It's alright. Many weapon types, shells, defensive movesets, and accessories make for huge build variety I assume. You can upgrade shells and accessories to to complement your playstyle. The main 2 in the demo were melee bleed and ranged burn, which were both fun extra damage bonuses that were useful. It's significantly easier than some souls-likes I've played though, with the default 'perfect block' defence option being incredibly easy to hit, but you always have the option to replace your block with the parry defence option instead for more risk / reward. Levelling feels pretty sucky, since you can't invest in individual stats like a regular souls game, and instead just level up everything at once like Nightreign. It normalises builds, since most of your player expression comes from your defensive move choice and accessory choice, so I can look past it. But it's still a bummer.
Just finished this game, would not recommend. It's got aspirations of being like Lies of P. Some of these bosses have insane combo chains like Arlecchino in the LoP DLC, but unlike LoP this game is janky as hell. Quite a few of the bosses have an attack where they'll spawn projectiles and it's basically luck as to whether you dodge them. I have recordings of me where you can see I'm not being touched by a beam attack and I still I'm being hit. It genuinely does look like you can run away to avoid it because it isn't touching you but the hitbox is way bigger than the beam. There's one attack on a boss where you dodge the projectiles but they glitch out after hitting the floor and carry on tracking you and then you get hit. The final boss has a fire attack that you can clearly run away from but you can't because it still hits you, and if you spam dodge to avoid you still take chip damage from the burn. I don't think there was a single boss the entire game where I wasn't throwing my arms up in the air and being like "THAT HIT ME?" The parry and riposte system is basically worthless in comparison to just spamming your abilities. The bosses get absolutely dumpstered if you use your abilities and it takes no skill. If you try to parry the fights are much harder and your reward is a riposte at the end that does an insultingly low amount of damage most of the time. The animations for the ripostes are brutal as hell, you'll snap their heads off spine and all, beat them to within an inch of their lives with their decapitated head, use their head as a silencer for your shotgun to deliver several gutshots and then go back in time and make their dad wear a condom so they were never conceived and then after all that you've done about the same damage as a single R2. Meanwhile I use an ability once and the boss is gasping for air and begging for mercy. And why is the parry tool with an actual tight window for parrying have a 1 second delay on being able to use it again so you can't parry fast combos with it? The base parry is too forgiving and a snorefest to use but the skillful parry is not a suitable replacement. Also a lot of the arenas are quite big but I still often managed to find myself trapped in a corner with my camera flipping out. The final boss had one of the biggest arenas in the game and at the same time one of the worst cameras. Why do you have to run back so much? I'm not talking about having to run a gauntlet of enemies to retry a fight, I'm talking about a boss with nothing in between you and it but a 30 second run from the bonfire to it. It's such time waste. If there's not gonna be any enemies or obstacles between me and the boss you should just put a bonfire or stake of marika right next to the boss so I can retry it right after dying. We live in a post Elden Ring world. You're making a souls like and let's not cope by saying "well akshually this game is not quite a soulsli-", it's a soulslike. Look at what Fromsoft did, look at how many people were relieved there were no stupid runbacks with nothing in the way and just copy that. Put some enemies in the way or just let me retry the boss without 30 seconds of stalling between attempts. The game is pretty buggy, I actually had to revert to a preview patch branch because one of the hotfixes made me crash when I warped. Before the hotfix I had a memory leak that made my game run progressively worse before that. There's one shortcut gate I must have opened 4-5 times because it kept closing on me for no reason. All this stuff will get patched probably but I'm reviewing the game I played not the game it will be in a year. Why does it cost so much to respec weapons too? I may as well just upgrade a brand new weapon from base than refund. Why do the upgrades cost so much too? It's crazy. It took me 22 hours to beat the game but I feel like the game only really had like 8ish hours of content and the rest of the game was just rehashing the same enemies over and over and over. All this being said, it's a huge step up over Mortal Shell 1. It's a game that I would have rated a 6 or a 7 out of 10 if not for all the problems, instead I give it more like a low 5. It's got potential to be an 8 if the devs knuckle down and start improving the game over the next year. But if I knew what I knew now I wouldn't have bought it in it's current state.
Whoever designed the parry and riposte mechanics needs to lose his job immediately. First off when you parry in this game like other souls like games it increases the "break/poise bar" until eventually you break the enemy's poise bar and deal MASSIVE rewarding damage. Whoever designed the parry mechs in this game seems to have forgotten that last part. after successfully breaking a major boss's poise bar you deal like 7% of their hp bar. This is not an exaggeration. Furthermore you cannot deal statis effect damage build up while they are in the recovery animation (the animation after you're suppose to do massive damage and there's that little time after where you can hit them while they're getting up). Executing the poise break damage animation doesn't count toward any statis effect build up either. and whatever statis effect you were tirelessly build up goes down while executing the poise break damage. So in conclusion. after successfully parrying enough to break the poise bar you get f***ed.
Up there with the best soulslikes. Highly recomend
