Just beat the game after 27 hours. I started off really, really liking the game. It felt tough, getting the first shell made such a huge difference. The game feels dense with a lot of corners to explore and cool weapons to find. The more I played though, the more I started to see the cracks. Limited enemy types, no real reason to use half the status types. Poison? Burn? Why bother. Eventually the game just started to feel tedious. It feels like the developers just ran out of creativity midway through. I was really let down by the final boss, glitchy mess, half the attacks don't land properly because of hitboxes, a total of what, 6-7 attack patterns? I definitely missed things in the game, because by the end I was burned out. I will say, I really enjoyed my first 10-15 hours. Game looks great, combat felt good against most mobs, learning the timing and getting ripostes felt really satisfying. Atmosphere is good. There's a lot to like about this game. But there's a reason Elden Ring is going down as the GOAT, and this game won't. I don't regret buying it, and will play Mortal Shell 3 if it ever gets made. I just wish there was more... depth or soul to it. Some QoL needed for sure, menu is annoying to move through. Every time I wanted to swap tarstones it felt like a chore. Navigating the map by having to remember what the name/category of the beacons felt bad. Let me just move the map and pick the one I want to go to. Ranged felt completely underwhelming against anything other than a basic mob. Granted, I didn't focus on using it too much, but why bother when my melee skills just blew stuff away? The shells also seems sort of unbalanced. I didn't want to invest too heavily into any particular one due to the resource mechanic, and ended up mainly using 3, and even then half the skill set felt pointless. TLDR; It's not bad, but lower your expectations if you're coming from something like Elden Ring.
Best game I've played in a long time...
What a great game. I prefer souls-likes that are not punishing. They can be difficult, but as long I can progress without losing anything, even if I die a lot, that makes it fun, There were some things I would prefer were different, but as is, just a great game. What I liked - There was a tarstone you could equip to make it a little easier, I appreciate making it more accessible. - Shorter game time. I just finished the game and it took me about 20 hours. I didn't do everything, but around 85% I think is what the game said. I took my time. - It wasn't a wide open RPG. I didn't feel like leveling up did much, but I do like the idea that I don't have to choose what stats to boost. I also liked that I could choose a shell/weapon/sidearm combo that fit my style. - I loved doing a perfect block. I wasn't quite good enough for a parry, but I appreciated the small number of enemy types so that I could hone my blocking skills and still progress through the map. Now for some feedback. - There were some quality of life features I wish came standard instead of needing an item equipped or mod. - Needing a tarstone to respawn at the start of a dungeon. I would like there to be a "Stake of Marika" type feature for bosses and dungeons. - Being able to heal or get more methers pulse. I had a mod that gave me back some health with a perfect block, that was great. Or like in elden ring where I can get some potions back after defeating a group of enemies - I enjoyed the "easier" difficulty. I wouldn't say this was easy a la jedi survivor, but less punishing. I'm ok with needing skill to progress and having the game teach me that in the starting hours, but some enemies I needed to equip OP tarstones to kind of cheat through. If that's the game design, fine, but I'd prefer to play the game however I want and be able to finish it.
AAA are out / AA are in Bikini armor is out / Booty plates are on Naked runs are out / Sheep runs are in I hope this game keeps its momentum going bc I haven't had this much fun since Bloodborne (which we won´t get here, so. embrace them shells)
Way better than the first one. Only gripe I have is how short it is. But overall love the game design and the bosses. great game 8/10
kinda mid, just play elden ring
This game is a disappointment. It has the potential to be a decent soulslike, but lack of balance spoils the entire experience. Why are the mobs so tanky? Why do they one hit or one combo me? Why are they more difficult than the bosses? Why are the beacons so sparse? Why do some many bosses have a moveset consisting of 3 moves, one of which is an obligatory boom boom boom smashing me with a sword/wheel/whatever in quick succession? Why are bosses so cheesable? Use the ability which allows you to leap into the air to do massive damage and stagger the enemy, a few heavies, resolve regenerates, rinse and repeat. It's the most primitive kind of difficulty - being overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of mobs, their tankiness and damage. And it really discourages any exploration, which is intrinsic to open world games. And yes, there are other issues. In the Lost Child fight I got thrown into the clouds only to land back with the boss back to full HP. Bosses sometimes freeze mid-fight as if they suddenly forgot what they were there for. The tougher souther areas do not give more gloom, proportionately to the increase in difficulty. In the Conquered Temple gate dungeon, the beacons are so far apart, and I got shot down or frozen or fell after attacking so many times that I almost rage quit. All this turns the game into a painful frustrating slog. The lore is also nothing too inspiring, found it very difficult to connect with a character with no individuality following a bird's and an oversized woman's orders to collect eggs. Seriously?
