Great! cant wait for the new entry!
User experience is a death by a thousand cuts, but the collectathon gameplay is top tier. The Monster Hunter series has been adapted to a creature collector in a way deeper way than I could've imagined, the Monsters have unique attacks adapted from their mainline movesets, on top of having an ultimate kinship skill that goes even deeper into why we like them as Monsters so much. In battle the "turn base puzzle" also comes in the breaking of parts to disable or topple bosses, just like in you'd do in the action mainline games. And the collectathon can go as far as a Monster retreating to it's nest, guaranteeing an egg of that species. But inside that den you might encounter a new Monster which spawns their own Den inside the one you're already hunting for, which is just grand. The player has a choice of 6 weapons that all have a different game plan, and they range from early game setup to building up to a big move the further you go in turns, or giving guarding and support actions. You can hold 3 weapons at a time and depending on the opponent you might wish to have equipped X instead of Y when a longer boss appears. Death by a thousand cuts comes in the form of constant monster and weapon changing to counter the current enemy, it adds a couple of seconds every minute of things you'd like to skip like menu hopping to a new Monstie before going to a fight, but these issues have seemingly been streamlined in the upcoming Monster Hunter Stories 3.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin was better than the first Monster Hunter game in nearly every way. And that's saying a lot, because I loved that game. Monster Hunter Stories 2 opens with this anime-esque cutscene, and you just know you're in for a treat here. New to this game are companions. You're no longer just fighting alongside you and your monstie. An ally and their monstie have been added to the battle. Honestly, this is a small touch that improved a lot of what I disliked about the first game. In the first game, I felt like every fight was a disadvantage because there were 2-3 enemies and only 1.5 of us (the main character's damage was practically negligible). Furthermore, it allowed for epic moments like seeing Avinia and Frostfang, Reverto, and Cheval and Rathi. These moments were epic and unexpected, since I didn't think the second game was so closely related to the first. I wish the two games were more closely connected. For example, Lute gets mentioned several times briefly throughout the story, but only really as an afterthought. He doesn't take on a full role within the second game's campaign. It would've felt more like an interconnected world a la Xenoblade Chronicles if Lute actually showed up and played a bigger role, but I digress. The battle system is pretty much the same as it was in the first game. You've still got the classic rock, paper, scissors mechanic, which never gets old. But now you can break certain parts of an enemy monster, helping you throughout the battle. I loved the environments in this game, as they were fully realized for home consoles rather than the 3DS. You can tell. However, I feel like a lot of these environments were just rehashes of the first game. You've still got a desert, a volcano, an arctic region, etc. They just show up in a different order. I see a lot of people saying they prefer the first game, and that's wild to me. Monster Hunter Stories 2 is a damn near perfect JRPG in every sense. While Monster Hunter Stories had its issues, the second game nearly perfected them. It totally immersed me in this game's story and lore. When I was playing it, I wasn't thinking about anything else besides this world. And after all, isn't that what video games are for?
