Mini Monsters: Gravitational Consensus is one of literally thousands of retro 2D platformers infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere... and I'm not kidding. Searching for "platformers" on the Steam store page yields over 17,000 results! Is this one of the best of those? Absolutely not. This garbage platformer is one of literally hundreds of platformers that use a gravity manipulation gimmick. The developer, who published this in 2024, proudly claims he was the guy who invented this "unique" concept in a platformer. It's bad enough when garbage like this gets dumped on Steam through Steam Direct, but it's worse when developers feel the need to lie about it. I mean, come on, I think "VVVVVV" is a terrible game for a lot of reasons, but you can't ignore the fact it had a gravity mechanism years before the developer "invented" this "unique" game mechanic. Platforming is an old, mostly dead genre, and this lacklustre experience, while it doesn't have an upfront cost, isn't saving the genre... it's no surprise this failed to capture any attention from gamers in the era of immersive 3D gaming. So this looks like an old 1990's Adobe Flash game that you might play in a web browser, and the problem there is obviously Steam wasn't intended to try compete with Chrome and Firefox. If it can be done in a web browser, it's not even close to a cutting edge PC gaming experience. That's a problem. On the topic of visuals, the weak looking 2D retro assets seem like they'd be more at home in a browser game or a mobile app. 3D graphics accelerators hit the mainstream of PC gaming in the mid 1990's with cards like the ATI Rage and Voodoo3D, there's no excuse for such poor 2D graphics in 2025. That alone is enough to disqualify this for recommendation. The character sprites look suspiciously like stolen/plagiarised stock assets, if true, that would make this technically a bit of an asset flip on top of just being a crap game. Edit: Yes, this is an asset flip, sprites stolen from here: https://craftpix.net/freebies/free-satyr-tiny-style-2d-sprites/ On pricing, this is "free" enough, at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, your time is valuable too. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. While this didn't cost me any money up front, I still feel ripped off.
