Infuriating but rewarding
Since this game was delisted you can now get it for free! Link on the discord channel for zip that installs into Steam. Multi player Capture the Flag mode is epic fun. Can practice with NPCs in single player mode. It looks good for its age, but you'll have to manually set the resolution for best graphics, I bought this game on a Steam sale in 2015 or so and have no regrets. Very fun street racer.

Many great street racing games were released in the early 2000s and this one is no exception. Midnight Club 2 didn't have the tuning or customizations of other similar titles but innovated in other ways. There are no restricted paths during races, which basically allows you to freely drive through any street and shortcut, or even smash through windows of various buildings. I like that in order to start a race you have to find your opponents while free-roaming and blink your lights, then drive to the starting line of the race together. It's a cool detail that makes the game immersive. Combined with the rivalry of the opponents, with their cheeky banter before and during races it feels like they mean business. Despite cars not being upgradable the sense of speed is in my opinion unmatched. I haven't played every racing game ( with cars ) that felt as fast as this one. Especially when you hit the nitro, it gives the car a kick strong enough to catch up with the racers even when they are far ahead of you. It does come with a price though as some races have so much traffic that it will be impossible to not crash. Meanwhile there are pedestrians who you can casually run over or send them flying by hitting them. Also, the open world is huge and you can drive to each city seamlessly ( no loading screens ) . Considering the amount of detail they put in and the hardware limitations back then, I'd say it's one of the most impressive things about the game. Last but not least there is a decent selection of trance music tracks which fit perfectly for midnight racing. The only downsides I can think of are : 1. Traffic in some races can get annoying. 2. No licensed cars. But if you are into sports/ supercars you will easily recognize that most of the vehicles are replicas or real cars, so no biggie.
