This is an amazingly refreshing turn based strat game. It's brutal when you don't plan properly. You have to understand that this does not rely on some innate stat, like initiative. You and the different factions take turns. This means, you have to choose your fights properly, and prioritize targets based on many factors - position, morale, concealment etc. It might be difficult when you first start out, but once you get the hang of the mechanics, it becomes VERY satisfying. I look forward to how this game grows! I highly recommend it.
The impoverished pirate AI starts with grenades and you don't. Flame throwers can wipe your squads through walls. You also just have to deal with way more unit variety than you are afforded in the beginning. You get ONE LMG and ONE rocket launcher; the rest of your dudes have ♥♥♥♥♥♥ M14s. The enemy also just has a fantastic time walking out of the fog of war to perfectly flank your units every time. There seems to be absolutely no "tactics" present in this game. The AI very obviously gets more information than you and it's annoying as hell. IDK maybe the point of the game is that the beginning is supposed to be awful. Man is it awful though.
Game is nice. The sound and music is great and it had me guessing in ways to try and maneuver round certain missions in order to complete them. I would honestly make the authority debuff per SL recruited -optional- it essentially made the game less fun. I don't care if they said the penalty is for "MUH REALISM" you are fighting [REDACTED] and giant bugs lets be honest here. What is the point of all these SLs when you know that some are more equal then others and the penalty to max authority just ends with you only choosing the best ones?
No saving during missions is a choice of all time.
It's still early release and all, but as someone that rarely picks up games in Early Access, when I saw this one I had to and I have no regrets. A lot of the main campaign stuff is still to come, but the squad based battles, weapon feels, squad feels, and so forth are very engaging. I love games where suppression fire is active and meaningful and this game does a very good job with it. It seems to be coming along very nicely and I'm pretty much at the point where I don't want to play anymore just so I'm not burnt out by the time release comes.
This game is easy to dump some time into and have fun. Really nails the tactical genre and fits nicely into a "Company of Heroes but turn-based" sort of vibe almost. The gameplay loop is engaging for an XCOM fan. Definitely still some Early Access stuff to work out and there could be more fleshing out on some things but the core gameplay is strong!
already very good could use more variation in missions and/or the non-fighting part between missions. Does not yet do a good job of hiding that its just one randomly generated mission after the next.
