"Max Massacre" isn't a game. It's an e-book dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual novel/e-book/fan-fiction, this has no notable gameplay. It's just clicking through badly written dialogue that would never be accepted in print by an actual professional publisher. How did something this badly written end up on Steam? When someone can't get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam Direct under the guise of a game. This is exactly in the middle of what we expect for garbage Steam E-books... this is a high school anime club dropout fan-fiction about the author and his imaginary anime girlfriend called "Celeste". The book follows a godawful cringey plot about fighting monsters and the author having conversations with his imaginary girlfriend. Because this was put together with the Ren'Py e-book construction kit, it didn't require any actual coding or development. It's a tool for failed authors to push their garbage high school anime club dropout fanfictions as games. Just like there's no professional writing here, there isn't any professional software development either. Visual novels/e-books are the worst way to try read a book (and they're always written far worse than real books too). Imagine reading your favorite book, be that War and Peace or The Davinci Code (are you ok??), but you have to click the mouse for every single sentence that appears. You'd hate it. It's a garbage way to try read a book... and even if it wasn't, this still isn't a game. Now imagine that experience with much worse writing. If these guys could write professionally, they'd be in bookstores. They wouldn't have to pay Valve $100 to self-publish this on Steam. But here we are. There's no reason for this to be on Steam when it could just be a webpage... e-books are just a bunch of cringe text and (usually character generator created) static 2D imagery. You don't buy an expensive gaming PC to use it for something your web browser can do for free. A peak of 3 concurrent readers for a free visual novel/e-book is a disaster. Out of 130 million potential gamers, almost nobody was interested. That level of rejection speaks for how badly written this is. To put this into perspective, to satisfy the global demand for this book, you'd only ever need to print 3 copies. That's what failure looks like. While this garbage cringe e-book has no up-front cost, you can find genuinely professionally written novels and comics at a public library or through websites like Project Gutenberg. Your PC isn't a Kindle, and I can't recommend non-game e-book visual novels to people looking for PC games.

Zetsubou games are quite short, but nicely told stories, though sometimes going a bit overboard with choice options and consequences, same thing was present here. Gameplaywise it's visual novel, there is pretty much only one choice in game, since as mentioned it is short one, so it's pretty much a linear story. Visually Max Massacre looks decent, nothing outstanding, but distinct enough to not be roped with ton of short VN slop present on steam. Though, that's mostly about characters, backgrounds are something you'd not notice if they were to be copy pasted anywhere else. Audio is basic, it's short free VN, what else would you expect. Plot is about living in a prejudice filled place, where you are an outcast, but there is a close person with you. That single choice in the game though gives you two very drastic options with extreme consequences. While one of them is kinda okaish, other one is too much in my opinion. If you play, you'd see what I meant. All in all - this is decent title, and it's free so you won't lose anything if you like VN and try it, also does not take much time.
It's free and It has achievements , so no complaints here
🔪 Max Massacre – Choices Cut Deep This visual novel dives into teenage lust, discrimination, and the blurry lines of morality. Your choices shape the endings—but what really is “right”? When survival means sacrificing your own values, will you kill to live? Will you abandon the one person who’s been your friend, lover, and protector? Tense, emotional, and thought-provoking. Struggle Rating: ★★★☆☆ – Tough decisions that weigh heavy on the heart. Xjur: I chose survival, but my soul still bleeds. On to the next.
Max Massacre Recommended Length: Very Short (1-5 hours) Number of Routes: 1 Choices: Yes Failure Possible: Ish Character Rating: Good Story Progression: Good Music Rating: Good Achievement Difficulty: 1 Additional Thoughts: This is a good short free VN, although i wish there could been a few more choices to maybe make more of another type of ending possible.
Not bad for a free game. It's tough to like Max the protagonist who is kind of a pushover for the majority of the story.
Amicalement, Le pasteur .
