Martial Arts: Brutality is an unusual blend of fighting game concepts and strategic card-based mechanics that attempts to recreate the tension of martial arts combat through careful planning rather than pure reflexes. Developed and published by Cold Beam Games, the title approaches the genre from a different angle, combining deck construction, tactical decision-making, and brutal one-on-one battles into a package that feels distinct from traditional fighting games. Instead of relying on complex button combinations and fast reactions, players build customized decks of martial arts techniques and use them to outthink opponents in combat. The game's central mechanic revolves around collecting and organizing cards that represent attacks, defensive maneuvers, counters, and special abilities. Every battle becomes a contest of prediction and resource management, with players choosing when to strike aggressively and when to conserve energy for future turns. This system creates a slower, more deliberate style of combat that rewards patience and planning. While some players accustomed to action-heavy fighters may find the pace unconventional, those who enjoy tactical gameplay will appreciate the amount of strategic depth available beneath the surface. One of the most impressive aspects of the game is its detailed injury model. Rather than simply reducing a health bar, attacks affect specific body parts and can inflict lasting damage that influences a fighter's performance. Targeting arms, legs, or vital organs becomes an important tactical consideration, as repeated attacks can weaken an opponent's effectiveness and create opportunities for decisive victories. This mechanic adds a layer of realism and brutality that gives every strike greater significance. Victories feel earned because they often result from a carefully executed plan rather than random chance. The martial arts theme is supported by a wide selection of techniques inspired by real-world disciplines. Players can unlock and experiment with moves influenced by styles such as Kung Fu, Karate, Taekwondo, and Wing Chun. As fighters develop, new combinations and advanced abilities become available, allowing for highly personalized combat strategies. The progression system encourages experimentation, rewarding players who take the time to discover effective synergies between different cards and fighting approaches. Multiplayer is where the game finds much of its long-term appeal. Competitive matches challenge players to adapt their decks and tactics against human opponents, creating encounters that are far less predictable than battles against artificial intelligence. The inclusion of team-based fights and larger multiplayer modes adds variety and keeps matches from becoming repetitive. Learning an opponent's habits, anticipating their next move, and exploiting weaknesses becomes a satisfying mental battle that complements the martial arts theme surprisingly well. Visually, Martial Arts: Brutality prioritizes function over spectacle. Character models and environments are relatively simple, but they effectively communicate the action and support the strategic focus of the gameplay. Animations clearly demonstrate the impact of attacks, while the injury system provides meaningful visual feedback throughout a fight. The presentation may not rival larger-budget fighting games, yet it succeeds in delivering information clearly and maintaining immersion during battles. The game's free-to-play structure makes it easy for curious players to jump in and experience its mechanics. However, progression can occasionally feel slow, especially for those eager to expand their collection of techniques quickly. Building a strong deck requires time and dedication, which may discourage players looking for immediate rewards. Nevertheless, the depth of the combat system helps justify the investment, particularly for fans of strategy-focused multiplayer experiences. What makes Martial Arts: Brutality memorable is its willingness to take risks with genre conventions. It does not attempt to compete directly with mainstream fighting franchises. Instead, it carves out its own identity by combining card-game strategy, martial arts customization, and detailed injury simulation into a cohesive experience. The result is a game that feels fresh even years after release, offering a rewarding challenge for players who enjoy thoughtful competition and experimentation. Martial Arts: Brutality successfully merges tactical deck-building and martial arts combat into a unique and engaging experience. While its presentation and progression systems have limitations, the strategic depth, creative injury mechanics, and satisfying multiplayer battles make it a worthwhile title for players seeking something different from the usual fighting game formula. Прикольная игра.
I'm not entirely sure if too many people play this, which is a shame because it is a decent game. nothing mind blowing obviously, but it's not bad. The art style and the presentation reminded me of something you would see on Newgrounds, like Road of the Dead. There are a few microtransactions, and it's a bit janky in places, but nothing, in my opinion, that ruins the experience for me personally. 6/10, hope it gets some more love at some point.
Couldn't even play the game because of a super old bug, cool. The developer responded to the most recent mention of the bug, but his solution did not help.
