Boy oh boy was it…an interesting journey. Or a psychological counselling session. I still cannot quite decide which one. Lingering is definitely a mature and dark game for adults, so do not go into it thinking that “hey, it is just a fun for several hours and then I will forget about it”. You will not, trust me. Or maybe it is just little old emotional me who takes everything to heart and tries to put herself in the characters’ shoes in each story. Anyway, let us have a deep dive into Lingering to see what kind of story it is. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2177304423
First things first or TL;DR
DO NOT buy this game if:

You either do not like LGBTQ+ topics and themes, as well as romances, or feel uncomfortable reading about them;
You are depressed or have a very difficult time right now, and dark scenes (some of which talk about suicide, bullying, mental illnesses, etc.) can trigger you;
You do not feel comfortable looking even at censored 18+ content or read anything even remotely related to it; characters also cuss quite often.
DO buy this game if:

You do not shy away from mature content (both in the form of text and pictures) and do not feel disturbed by dark topics connected with major emotional issues and mental disorders;
You have no issues with same-sex romances and people discussing them;
You are not afraid to go through some serious drama
and see how characters can overcome their fears and accept themselves
.
You like stories presented as comic panels with their own unique art style (WARNING! There are occasional flashing scenes during animated parts).
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2178479511
My thoughts about this visual novel
The best part about Lingering is its diverse cast of characters. You can step in their shoes and see how events unfolded for various sides of the conflict, what each person did at a specific time and what they felt about various events. There are a lot of great personalities, and all of them have very dark secrets. At the same time, all these people are very accepting towards each other and even people outside of their circle (not all, but some at least). So many absolutely tragic things happened to these poor souls, but they still go on and strive for the better future.
But I do think that the director of their company is not a good person, at all. She seems to be very selfish and too focused on her ‘son’; she does not really care about her colleagues for the most part.
Prejudice, as well as badmouthing and bullying. I absolutely hate all three and despise people who think it is OK to make others feel miserable. It was nice to see that Lingering openly talked about these problems and offered some ways to address them. Now, another interesting thing about Lingering is that you can open some chapters only after reading the ones for other characters. I saw a very similar thing in 428: Shibuya Scramble, and I absolutely loved it! This brings more depth to each story and person, in my opinion. Your choices really matter and can lock you from specific endings and scenes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2177276338 I should say, I am not very well-versed in the LGBTQ+ topics, so this was a unique experience for me to see that almost 80% of characters in this game are either lesbian, gay or bisexual, and they are completely open about it for the most part. To be honest, it was a bit unusual setting for me as a person who comes from a very conservative country, but I got used to it fast. Now, I should also warn you that many characters here speak about their ‘passionate hugging’ activities quite a lot, so be ready for this kind of conversations. And I cannot but admit that at some point, I have been tricked, I have been backstabbed and I have been quite possibly, bamboozled by two characters and their relationship. A big spoiler incoming, so read at your own risk:
I have been rooting for Snow and Fox from the very beginning! The writer tricked me into believing that they could be a thing, and a pretty wholesome too. And then boom! Nope, fan girl, not in this game. I swear, I was no less surprised with this turn of events than Fox! xD
Another important thing about any visual novel is the writing. And I am a bit on the fence here. On the one hand, all characters had enough depth to look realistic and relatable, and the story itself is great. The writer was able to address very sensitive topics as gently as possible while not making the whole thing sappy and weird. On the other hand, I think that some parts of the story were rushed. I honestly wish it was longer and showed us more of some characters. But the Best Ending was lovely, hand down. Somewhat bittersweet (and a bit awkward…you will see what I mean if you read it), but still lovely. Speaking of the music, it was nice, but nothing special. Also, I had two issues with it (one of them is actually more on the funny side). First, there was a track that played during calm scenes, and the thing is, one of the YouTubers I watch uses it in all of his videos as an intro. And I could not but think about him every time this music started, which was hillarious. Second, the one and only thing I cannot stand at all is…is the sound of passionate kissing. It just makes my skin crawl when I hear all this slurping (ewww!) that is supposed to be hot, for some unknown reason. And every, every adult scene in this visual game had this sound effect! Oh my poor ears… And the last but not least, the artwork I mentioned before. One word: amazing! Everything, except for some backgrounds, is neatly drawn, and I liked pixel character models too. Lingering has a pretty unique style of both the artwork itself and how it is presented as a comic book with partially animated action scenes.
Would I recommend it?
The main message of this visual novel is that you should not suppress your emotions just because everyone expects you to do it. If you need to cry – cry; if you need help – do not be afraid to ask for it; if you need professional advice – seek a councilor or a psychiatrist. As one of the characters said, “We are surrounded by happy-looking people in social media and because of it, we start thinking that there is something wrong with us if we are not happy too.” Do not pretend to be alright when you are not, stop hurting yourself with those bottled up emotions – they can actually turn into your worst demons. And, most importantly, just love yourself. Personally, I would recommend Lingering to people who want something mature and thoughtful. This is a well-written story that you will enjoy for its darkness that still has a bright ray of hope in the end. Pretty good Visual Novel. It has a different format making it very interesting. It looks like a comic book and the story is divided in chapters with each of them having 1 of 6 protagonists point of view. All chapters complement each other and often show different sides of an event. The choices matter and you get 13 different endings divided in 3 main branches of the story. I love the art. The drawing is beautiful and very colorful. The soundtrack is amazing and perfectly complements what's happening at the story. Hope the dev makes another visual novel in this kind of style and genre. You have action, thriller, romance. I liked the characters very much and a sequel would be nice. Goldie is my favorite followed by Angel and Doll. No patch needed. There are a few [6 I believe] sex scenes but they are not explicit. And I honestly think they were done right and fit perfect into the game. Nothing more, nothing less was necessary. Bought on release with 15% discount and don't regret it at all. Well worth the price I paid. Highly recommended if you like vn's and a good story. 10/10
This game is weird…most games don't make me feel so torn on my review. I think the issue is so many individual parts in this game are fantastic but the narrative holding up the overall game just doesn't work. The art direction is certainly great, the music is great, over all sound design is fantastic. As far as visual novels go this is a high quality one. However, to put it lightly the narrative doesn’t make any sense. The overall plot is that a secret division of the government handles monsters that are created by people that suffer from depression/anxiety and other emotional issues. So that’s fine…but the game attempts to tell a murder mystery without seemingly any evidence, suspects, or any narrative focus. So that’s a problem. Look, this game has a problem with a lot of murder mystery games, the mystery can only be as good as the writer. This game is basically not a mystery or at least not a puzzle mystery. No clues exist that allow you to solve it. The solution is utterly random and could have easily been anything. The game is also strange in that it doesn’t seem to care about this murder mystery…at one point the game has a side plot about two children that might be creating monsters and harming people…which has nothing to do with the main murder mystery plot. This “side quest” takes quite a long time and this game is way too short for “side quests.” It feels like halfway through the creator decided to tell a different story. After that section you then go into the end game and it feels extremely rushed and nonsensical. The ending itself seemed to have no connection to any decisions I made throughout the game and ended basically before I could blink. It feels like the creator ran out of money and had to finish things up real fast. This games plot needed room to breathe and it wasn’t given any. The ideas the narrative brought up in the last 30min needed to be stretched out over probably 30hrs…not 30mins. Normally, I would write a review going deep into spoilers and explain why exactly the plot has severe issues…but it’s just too exhausting to do for this game. I literally could not begin to explain all the issues with the plot…it’s a mess. It’s a shame because the characters, the character relationships/romances, the music, the art direction, the sound design…basically everything else in this visual novel is great and if the plot worked this would be a must buy. It really just feels like this game was not finished…at all. Hopefully this developers next game has a much stronger focus on a cohesive narrative. Honestly, I think the real issue is the setting of a secret government division hunting down monsters with a murder mystery central plot. This game should have been a supernatural romance game with no murder mystery and the secret government agency should have been more geared toward just investigating why spirits are appearing instead of a paramilitary organization. What this game clearly cares about are the actual characters and the emotions they feel and this narrative greatly hampers that.
worth buying and playing. mainly a lot of reading but you do get point and click on once awhile and some times you need to do QTE, that just requires to click on the circle before it disappears. failing could result in different outcomes and you always get 2 choices to pick from, depending on what you pick has different outcome for you or the other's character's scenario. You also can't pick 1 character and play their story to end, each character unlocks more scenario's for the other characters. I love the art style and everyone is sexy and good looking, the men and women. sadly there is not a lot of "R18" in this game and it doesn't go into depth with them. You just get 1 screen of 3 different tiny pictures, like the last screen shot shown on the store page. You can also choose to be straight, gay or no sex scene at all during the "R18" sceness.
To be honest, I wasnt sure if I should try this visual novel, since i didnt like the other one from Ceylon entertainment. But im glad I tried. Its so much better - although it still has some minor issues. If you dont mind something with much flirtyness in the beginning (were gender doesnt matter) and an interesting story which reminds a bit of Persona 5 then go for it :) Pro: - Gorgeous art - Many CG's - I liked the style of the UI (though only negative thing is in the beginning while opening the game when the writing is white on a white background till the animation is finished) - Story is interesting. Neutral: - Timer for some choices - The codenames are well.. yeah Playboy, Angel, Goldie, ... - In the beginning I found the conversations hilarious (with all there flirty input ;) I liked it but not sure how others might feel) and some had really bad jokes :) - Music is fitting Contra: - Some characters speak french and even answer in french. I can kind of guess what they are saying from the context or google it - but unless there is a character in scene that also doesnt understand french it feels bad without any translation. - Most background have a pixel style - but there were like 2 that were uncle mughens visual novel backgrounds; which I consider a hard breach of style from a visual novel that was otherwise really consistent - I still have some questions left.. - I dont understand the use of the bolt font most of the time. So I found that a bit annoying. - [strike] Missing the CG's from the video (this is a big issue for me, since the vid. got me interested in it - and either it should be used as an opening video or the CG's should be used somewhere..)[/strike] All in all I really enjoyed the visual novel. [strike] Im kind of missing the Opening video from the Preview (since i loved it) or at least the CG's in it, since I always have the opinion that a preview/teaser/trailer should show content and not things that dont appear in game. However I only cleared the game like 80-90% so if by any chance I just missed it I will update my review if I find it :) [/strike]
This game is so...interesting! It's worth every penny! Pretty arts. The interactive interface makes the game really fun and engaging. It's a Visual Novel, so don't bring your expectation for an RPG into this. The story plot is pretty thick, sewed together nicely, easy to follow, and meaningful, a bit on a heavy side but that's the what the mature tag's for. You get to choose characters and you can see the same story from different people perspectives. Super cool in my opinion. Honestly I didn't expect much when I made the purchase, but this goes above and beyond my expectation, so it's a super nice surprise! I'm not LGBTQ+ but I enjoyed the game thoroughly. It was really good!
This game has a big potential to become something greater than it is, but I didn't feel that got any kind of reward or deep constructive thinking out of it. Just so you know, this is not about romance. This is about mental health. Dealing with mental health is not simple, it's a personal struggle that involves the people who loves you and care for your well being. They did mention about society not caring to take care of people who are suffering (which is not something easy to do), but instead treating them as outcasts, and other super deep stuff, but still, it did not give us a real chance to help those characters in a active way. Only watching as the end arrived in a helpless way. The begining was so cofusing and boring. It took me a while to get used to all the random chatting and apparently irrelevant problems from other people. Finally, all was put together and bam! it's over! At the end, I felt no real interest in looking up all the endings so that could, maybe find something that I felt good seeing. But, for real, it's not worth it. There's another thing, they gave us the opportunity to go throught all the main characters (sometimes even repeating the same scene from that chracter's perspective), whcih was cool and all, as much as it was confusing at first. "uhh, is there any meaning to this?" I guess there was a purpose at first, but it added little to no meaning to what happened with the couple I wanted to see the most. So, yeah. I would like to hear what other people thought about that.
My review is pretty much just complain after years of butthurt after all the triggers it given me (well yes, I played this game years ago when it come out, just forgot to give it a review). The only non-spoiler advice I could give you is: if you up for the romance with no happy end then go ahead. Even more so if you have played the dev's preivous games. If you still keep reading to this point mean you ready for the spoiler. I hate the easter egg and the romance in this game, along with the game ending. If you wonder what happened then lets talk about the dev's previous game - Amplitude. Amplitude male protagonist have 3 LI - 2 female and 1 male. The game kinda imply that the male protag canon love the male LI, which that guy also have unavoidable death in the end of the game. Then in this game, you will find out what happen after that: the male protagonist married 1 of the female LI, then she died, he re-married the other female LI and she also died, which left him with 2 daughters that hint to be the reincarnate of the female protagonist of the dev 1st game (Freak-Quency) and the female antagonist of the previous game (Amplitude). Also, Amplitude's male protag now have a lover who look and name exactly like his death crush in previous game. He swear that he didn't see him as replacement of his death crush but idk, because that guy could also be the reincarnate of the male LI as well. I HATE THIS. AND, the female protagonist of this game have like, 2 or 3 love interest? And she have a happy ending. But the male protagonist only have 1 and the end is that one actually a part of him, which have to go back and become 1 with him and disapear. The male protagonist get lonely and start to see hallucinations that his lover come back. Well, this is what I get for ignore all the red flag of her game ever since Freak Quency. The ending is basically "everything you have done in the whole game is meanless". And those easter egg... idk... why bother to give us illusion choices when you gonna do it like that anyw?
This game made me want to be a better person.
