Illum is a low-poly adventure game where you play as an astronaut exploring a mysterious world. While it’s a short experience, the game still manages to capture a captivating, space-like atmosphere.
Pros:
- adorable character design - the simple, cute design of the astronaut makes the game more endearing - pretty environment - despite being minimalist, the low-poly art style creates a beautiful and serene world - space-like movement - the floaty controls add a sense of weightlessness that fits the space theme perfectly - cool mechanics - easy-to-learn mechanics that fit well with the space setting - fitting music - the soundtrack complements the exploration and enhances the experience - great atmosphere - the combination of visuals and sound makes the game feel calm and immersive
Cons:
- no running - the lack of a run option can make exploration feel slow, especially if you want to speed things up - slow-paced - for those who prefer more action, the game might feel too relaxed - very short - it's an enjoyable experience, but you’ll be left wanting more after finishing it Overall, Illum is a charming title that delivers a calm and memorable space adventure. I enjoyed the experience so much that I wished it was longer—its soothing pace and atmospheric world make it a perfect game to unwind with. "illum" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. It's from University of Southern California. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. The students phoned in the graphics when making this short third person narrative adventure game. All you do in this "experience" is journey with a light friend to connect light gems and awaken a dormant kingdom by hooking up all the lights. In terms of visuals, this features fairly low quality low poly 3D graphics which will deter a lot of gamers, understandably. Gaming is a visual medium, and while some developers struggle with creating high quality visuals, failing to do so is a disservice to gamers. It's very difficult to recommend bad looking games. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. It would be unethical for students to try charge money for their homework assignments, so you don't have to pay any money for this. But you'd still have to spend your time downloading this, and "time is money", as they say. There's the other problem, too... as a student project, this wasn't made for gamers. There's no requirement for them to polish and balance the game properly, all they need is something to show the faculty so they can get their grade and move on. Let's once more ask... why is that good for gamers? It's obviously not delivering a solid product. Yet here it is, on the store page, and here you are, reading my review for a student demo that's going to waste your time. While genuine amateur developers who made real products get ignored because they have to compete with this stuff. In some ways, this deluge of student projects on Steam is harmful to everyone. In terms of public reception, this failed. There's over 130 million unique gamers visiting Steam every month. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 5 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? This one scores a "nope". While it won't necessarily cost you money, the time and hard drive space it requires could be better invested in one of the many higher-quality alternatives on Steam.
this is the most adorable game i've ever played. beautiful, vivid, peaceful. light-hearted. short play, will make your heart melt PS: please tell me what you used to make the voice for the orb. i'm guessing it was a cat but i'd like to know either way. it made my heart happy :)

____________________ Другие обзоры и прохождения ːs_catː
