If the game was a little longer it would be easier to recommend, but it's only 25 minutes, not 1 hour that the store page suggested (half of my time was making tea, not playing). The thing is, I don't really care if the game is $2~5, I am just saying it's important to have enough runtime so the players have a lasting impression of the experience, otherwise it's very easy to just beat the game, and never think about it again. To reference a developer that makes similar games, Madison Karrh started making 30 minute games, and eventually made a 2 hour game that found a lot of fans, you don't need to make a huge game, but you want it to be at least long enough so you have some attachment to the experience, and when I finished this game, I wanted more, I wanted maybe a few background changes, a few puzzles, and maybe a little more of that inside look at the family. I mean this is okay if this is your first project, I thought the experience overall was enjoyable, there are many similar games on steam that have a consistent audience, but with more content. Initially I assumed that the greenhouse was just the first location, generally when you play similar games they will have maybe 3 to 10 separate sections like these, each with a set of puzzles that are themed to that location, and the devs would adjust the price accordingly, depending on how many locations they made or how much work it took them to make it. Most of puzzles the are just moving objects into place, nothing difficult, overall just a chill experience, for example moving the dry flowers into the book slots. I had a few small issues actually finding the puzzle locations, it's not a big deal, but I think these games normally would highlight those areas in some way so you not brute forcing the background. Another game design trick you could use is just adding some optional interactions that would trigger some animations around the greenhouse, you will see a lot of that from Cotton Game developer, if you want a reference. These background interaction games are relatively simple with the gameplay, so you want to make up for it by making the player explore the background and click on curious things, and reward them for doing so with animations.
Pros:
(+) Just a nice relaxing experience, enjoyable vibes, easy puzzles. Nothing wrong with that, just a very short game so. (+) I did enjoy the illustrations and the coloring, I just wish you had more of them.
Feedback:
Content Expectations/Making a lasting experience: - it's not so much $/hour, more so that I want you to give me enough time to enjoy the experience, and 25 minutes is not enough to do that no matter how nice the game is. You should aim for at least 3 locations with a set of puzzles each, so right now you have 1, greenhouse, so like a 1-1.5 hour is more of a baseline for these games. - try to add a few achievements next time, or some interaction/optional achievements with the backgrounds - you could maybe highlight the puzzle areas a little better, it was a bit awkward to find them in the background Overall Thoughts: 6/10 There are many devs on steam that just make similar cute puzzle games over and over and it works very well for them, but if you don't aim for at least 1.5 hours, I think you will have a hard time making a lasting impression. I think 3-5 puzzle sections is more acceptable, 25 minutes is not enough for any game. You not doing anything wrong, but this game should have been 3 times longer on average, that is vey much a baseline in this price range and the medium. Ignore the Blackbird is a creepy-cute puzzle game with gorgeous hand-crafted watercolor artwork and a surprisingly haunting story hiding beneath its charming surface. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3726900852 The entire game takes place inside a single room: a family’s greenhouse. A blackbird perches on various objects around the space, inviting you to explore their stories. Click that object, and a minigame begins. Complete it, and the blackbird moves on to another object, revealing a small piece of the story with it. As you progress, the tone of the game shifts considerably. While in the beginning you find yourself on a warm, sunlit summer day, full of brightness and calm, the atmosphere grows gradually darker and more somber, and so does the story. It’s a hauntingly layered tale of a little girl named Sonya and her family. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3726900936 Some of the puzzles reinforce this duality in a very clever way: you are tasked with rearranging the same paper fragments, only to find that the completed version reveals something far more unsettling than the positivity given by the original arrangement of the puzzle. It's as if Sonya's innocent view of the world is set against its harsh reality, told through the puzzles themselves. The name of the game also comes into play here: are the blackbird’s revelations the actual dark truth, or should they be ignored, as the title suggests? https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3726901012 The game is intentionally short. A single playthrough can be completed in less than an hour, which makes sense as the game is designed as a prologue to a larger multi-part series. If you're looking for something nice and easy that you can finish in one sitting, with an unexpected sorrowful and slightly twisted narration, you might want to give Ignore the Blackbird a try. Ignore the Blackbird is a (very) short story about a child who has experienced a family loss. With hand-drawn scenes, we find Sonya in her mother’s greenhouse reflecting on the items that surround her… plants, a journal, a clock, a note, origami, a picture, etc. Clicking on a specific item brings the player to a simple puzzle. Most involve dragging and dropping objects to reorganize them into a predefined format. Pieces lock into place when positioned correctly. I spent 30 minutes from start to finish. While there is an implied destruction of a family, we learn very few details about Sonya other than understanding that her world has been turned upside down and her joy has diminished. The game auto-saves your progress on exit, returning you to the greenhouse in the same state as it was when you left (i.e., completed puzzles remain completed). Steam achievements are not currently supported, but should be added in the near future. I appreciate the effort that went into this game, and it is a worthy first effort for a small development team. The art and the music create a whimsical experience, and the developers have captured the mood shift from bright spring colors to the decay of autumn. At the end, they indicate that a second chapter is forthcoming. At present, the brevity of the current chapter keeps me from whole-heartedly recommending it. If you don’t mind a quick romp through very simple puzzles and a charming environment, then Ignore the Blackbird may be just right for you. A short adventure of 9 simple puzzles. A little girl talks with a black crow... The graphics in hand-drawn cartoon style are really nice. There's no real plot, just short dialogues. This is the first episode, a continuation is planned... While it is very short, it has a really good atmosphere. I like supporting people creating their artistic passion projects and I can tell that's what this is. I hope the dev continues the series.
I really liked the story of the game, and the artstyle is very pretty and original. The puzzles feel rewarding and the game has a deeper theme than i thought it would have. Overall score: 9/10
I played the Jam-Version on itch.io and now the full version. The game is so beautiful with its amazing art. I loved the relaxing puzzles. The story starts heart-warming and then gets darker. A well done little cozy-game.
Very cute puzzle game with a variety of puzzles and great artwork.
A cute and atmospheric little puzzle game with lovely art and music. I felt like it was a bit too short, but still a nice experience.
Pretty cute game with calm puzzles, but the story does turn quite dark.
