Beautiful atmosphere, puzzles were well engineered. I'd love to see more from this team.

What a sweet mystery. Its gameplay wasn't especially involved but there were some light puzzles to make it slightly more than a visual novel, and the story was so up my alley it felt written for me. I'd have liked to see more from the individual acts (especially the first act) but it really was perfect for an evening's entertainment. Play this one at night, in the dark with some candles lit, and maybe a few treats.
This game was absolutely beautiful. I am not the biggest fan of games without voice-acting because it is so easy for me to zone out while reading, but I think this game kept my attention thanks to the stunning visuals. I think the representation of mental health was very accurate- I am no expert but do have some personal experience. In terms of gameplay In terms of gameplay I think it is possible to get stuck in a few places, and a puzzle near the end had me pulling out pen and paper; but I think that is a good thing! It felt rewarding figuring stuff out and I was almost sad when it ended. I reccomend for people who enjoy point-and-click games or visual novels! Many thanks to the creators for this experience!! I'll definitely be getting their next game! ♥
Great game! Very atmospheric and well written; you get immersed and lost in the story. It is dark in tone. Mature. It is also beautiful to look at and with background music that supplements the scenes and sets you in the right mood. It's short enough to experience it in one or two sittings. I'm really impressed with this little gem.
If on a Winter's Night, Four Travelers is a deeply metaphorical and world shaking point and click adventure that probably would feel more natural in a different medium, but provided an entertaining game experience nonetheless.
Overview
There isn't a lot bad OR good to say about this game. It's an extremely linear pixel art point and click game. I enjoyed my time with it, but don't think that the majority of people would like it. This game is slow, shrouded in mystery and vague thematic storytelling, and very tedious at parts. Still, I enjoyed it. The story was interesting and the artstyle kept me engaged during many moments when I felt like throwing in the towel. I played the game entirely across two sittings, but it could easily be done in one without feeling too fatigued. I'd recommend this game if you are very patient and like some metaphorical storytelling. Plus, it's free. What's the harm in giving it a shot? I'm obviously being quite critical, but this game was also created by two developers, which is pretty fantastic. They did a great job and you should support them.
Sights/Sounds
The aesthetic, set in post-WWI Europe (for the most part) was honestly pretty fascinating. The pixely visuals and atmospheric sound design added a lot to my immersion, and the old-timey music from the multiple gramophones around the game were beautiful. The game had a very stripped down vibe, but the sound design and music penetrated my headphones in all the right moments to keep me interested.
Gameplay
This is easily the worst part of the game. As a two-developer studio, I don't know what else they could've done, but even with the limited scope, the game felt quite dragged on. I spent at least half of my entire time with the game figuring out what order in which to interact with things because this is, after all, a point and click game. You literally just have to point and click things in the right order to solve puzzles and it got old fast. I liked that they at least kept telling the story whenever you had to point and click, but it never felt particularly smooth.
Narrative
Like I've already said, the story is very metaphorical and shrouded in mystery moments, but I found it to be an overall interesting and well-put-together story. I enjoyed learning about the four travelers, their lives, and their reasons for showing up on the train. I don't want to spoil anything, but I did think it was a liiiiitle cliche, the whole trope of the train. But still. Good story, it made the game worth playing.
