(Note: Playtime is inaccurate as I used the Heretic + Hexen remaster, but will still review the game as it's original counterpart.) More Hexen for your Hexen! Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel is a expansion pack to the original Hexen featuring a new campaign with 3 hubs (plus a bonus Deathmatch hub) and that Enemy and Level design Hexen is known for albeit scaled back in ways. It follows the 3 Heroes, Baratus, Parias, and Daedolon after kicking Korax into the ground and are whisked away into the Realm of the Dead and have to find their way out. Which is a problem as the titular Dark Citadel stands in your way. As expansion packs go this basically kinda gives you more of the same just a tad harder and sometimes shorter in areas. Gameplay of DotDC is basically identical to Hexen, you even have the same single map to introduce the game before going straight into the hubs. The main difference obviously comes with the new levels and the difficultly. Being a expansion pack that came out only a few months and still back in the 90s the level design isn't too much different in style to what the base game offered. Very simple depictions of locations but enough detail to not run into that abstract environment zone that levels from Doom and sometimes Heretic offered. The expansion also deals in the same kind of puzzles, the types of enemies, and basically nothing new, just at a smaller scope and decently harder considering it comes after the main game. If you enjoyed Hexen's no guidance design to puzzling solving you'll feel right at home here. Overall, Deathkings of the Dark Citadel in a nutshell is just more Hexen, unlike other expansion packs that would soon follow, there's nothing like new weapons, enemies, or anything of the sort, just more of what Hexen does best. Although the inclusion of a 4th Hub exclusively for Deathmatching is somewhat interesting. If you weren't a fan of Hexen's gameplay loop there's not much reason here to complete it, other than bragging rights.
Hardcore Hexen
So, if you've ever played Hexen and thought: MAN, this game is too easy with its switch hunt, puzzles, cryptics, monster respawns and mazes, and I want something HARDER Then this addon - is for you Unfair monster teleports - check Even more items to insert in things - check More puzzle switches - check More secrets needed to unlock to have progress - check Some bosses return - check Harder battles - check But to be fair The plot makes no sense at all - your already dead masters - are back - again. And they want revenge - so we about to kill them - again The level design is still pretty vague but at least now there's way less going back in forth between locations - so its way easier to understand what to Also, lots of shaking in frozen dungeons - not a fan of that. No new textures or visual upgrades No new weapons or monsters or music, pretty much everyting except for some new quest items is reused Therefore, not very replayable Final score - 3.4 Pretty bad, feels like a cash grab, although some improvements in gameplay loop are commendable.

Convoluted Mess Objective Review 6 of 5 must play. 5 of 5 great story great game-play. 4 of 5 great story average game-play. 3 of 5 average story great game-play. 2 of 5 give it a go if it's you're favourite genre. 1 of 5 play if you have nothing better to do, 0 of 5 play if you're a masochist. -1 of 5 avoid. Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel score is 0 of 5 Subjective Review Played on GZDoom, for hours, and hours...and hours. By the time that third "hours" came around it stopped being fun. Respawning enemies, masks and gems that don't seem to want to go into place in order to proceed through the game, then, suddenly, they do pop into place. I never knew if I was making headway or just spinning my wheels. Running through the same places, over and over again, killing the same respawning monsters, over and over again. Got to the point where I felt nauseous whenever I considered giving it another go.

No cambia nada sustancialmente.

Played through GZDoom. It's more Hexen. That's it, really. As is customary of the times, this expansion adds new levels, but no new enemies or weapons. The reason I'm not recommending it is because of the spawn mechanic: the base game would just spawn one weak enemy from time to time, like an Ettin or an Afrit. The expansion spawns in entire groups, including strong enemies like the Slaughtaurs, centaurs that can raise their shields to become invincible and reflect projectiles, and Wendigos. This makes the expansion a massive slog to play through. Buy it only if you're an hardcore Hexen player.
