This game was too good to be true. This shouldn't be available for sale anymore, they made a tech demo, put it up for sale, and abandoned it. DO NOT BUY THIS.
At this point the game appears to be abandoned. Am finding it somewhat unplayable in its current state as well. Well I can't log into the Hero Server where I have my character for at least a week or longer. I did pay for early access which I did attempt to get a refund but it had just been too long and I had played too much. This was mid-November when things seemed to be being worked on. So just wanted to warn others before putting money into it. Enjoyed for the most part what I did experience in the game. But it does seem that it isn't gonig anywhere further from where it is at this point. YMMV

Steam just refunded this game. Dev's have cancelled it, get your money back why you still can. Buyer beware! Smedley needs to get out of the gaming industry, everything he touches goes to sh$@!
This game had potential, it was cut short before it reached it's full potential. I purchased this game with hopes that it would be continued, as did many others. Now we're left with nothing and the people who put time in to bringh it to it's current stage are left with nothing to show for but high hopes and lost potential. Unfortunate...
Reflection 2 year on: This game was always doomed to fail because it had no purpose. RPGs have a backbone of questing and storyline to drive the gameplay. It's the entire spine of the game. Hero's Song didn't have any of this, and as far as I know, never intended to have one. This made the gameplay have no purpose beyond a few random fights. On top of that they relied far too heavily on procedural generation of the world, maps and most other things. Humans can see through that very quickly and become bored. Everything looked the same and was visually boring even in this early stage. These two factors made the game pointless to play and little more than a tech demo for skirmishes. Despite the refunds, this was not even early access game by any honest standard. All you do is run around and attack mobs with a handful of spells or moves. Completely pointless and too early.
Game company has gone under, don't buy the game. The curse of Smed. To get a refund see this page http://pixelmagegames.com/index.px
Every time I put faith in a title before its finished things go wrong. Oh but I'm excited for Yooka-Laylee tho i trust those guys. Anyhow kids if you want to be a happy gamer 1.Dont purchase alphas or fund kickstarters of anykind 2.Don't pre-order 3.And for god sakes dont buy a game the first few days its out. Wait for trusted reviews to tell you whats what. 4.Never read Ign, Pcgamer, Gamesradar, gamespot or basically any companies that are involved in games because to them everything is a 10/10. This game had tons of potential...but its exactly that, potential. At least they'll refund people which is leagues better than many of these developers. And Smed...I really think you guys could have done a great job. Thanks for letting us get our money back , maybe you can still make games that you believe in without all the corporate bs.
R.I.P
I recieved this game for free from a friend who took part in the Indiegogo campaign. If you're like me, when you're on the fence about a game you read the negative reviews to see where the criticisms are in order to help you decide if they're valid for you. This review is offered in that spirit. http://massivelyop.com/2016/12/19/smed-says-heros-song-is-working-through-some-things/ Read this article before deciding to spend your money on this one. You should also probably know that the kickstarter was pulled after one week and the indiegogo raised about half of what it was looking for. I personally have about 20 hours into this game and feel as though there's so much potential and promise here. It is very early access at this point, but it's my opinion that there already exists the necessary framework for a truly great game. That being said; there's also a daunting amount of work that still needs to be done before it becomes that great game. As it stands, the mix of procedural world generation, combat, crafting, class progression, and permadeath, are compelling and addictive (also currently frustrating due to balance issues that could, and hopefully will, be easily fixed). As of this writing there have been no updates for over three weeks. Prior to that, updates were occurring on a weekly (or better) basis. More concerning than this is the lack of communication from anyone on the dev team in the official forums since that last update. I realize that this is, for many of us, the holiday season, but that total lack of communication to the people whose word of mouth would hopefully help build the playerbase, alongside of John Smedley's reddit post, seems to indicate problems beyond game development. I believe in this game and not only do I not begrudge any of the time I've spent playing - I'm eager and hopeful to play any and all future updates and I will update this review accordingly. I can be as patient as I need to be, but at this point I would not buy this game.
got it as a gift :( now its gone gg
