You're a wizard, Doomguy.
Heretic is like Doom but with magic. Best classic game.
A favorite
A classic boomer shooter that can be best described as "Doom" in a fantasy setting - arcade-style, fast-paced, bloody, and fun. "Heretic" shines especially bright when compared to its successor, "Hexen". Here are a few key advantages that put "Heretic" ahead: - longer overall campaign duration; - greater enemy variety; - more weapon types (per single-character playthrough). Both games share a similar level design philosophy, but "Heretic" benefits from a more straightforward structure. There’s no need to teleport between separate hubs, making exploration much more enjoyable. In "Hexen", a huge chunk of the playtime is spent running around multiple interconnected maps trying to figure out which door just opened after pressing a switch. The game doesn’t tell you where the change occurred, so you're forced to blindly revisit previous areas, hoping to stumble upon the right path. In "Heretic", searching for secrets is just as rewarding, but the logic is always local: the way forward is nearby - you just need to find it. "Hexen" gets a "fail" from me, while "Heretic" earns a confident thumbs-up.
An absolute classic, at the time it was a big deal in the midst of all the Doom clones because this was more focused on melee combat and fantasy. This version is packed in DOSBox, it works...ok, but to be quite honest it's recomended you use a sourceport like GZDoom.
Finally, A Game In The Hexen/Heretic Series That Is Actually Fun Objective Review 6 of 5 must play. 5 of 5 great story great game-play. 4 of 5 great story average game-play. 3 of 5 average story great game-play. 2 of 5 give it a go if it's you're favourite genre. 1 of 5 play if you have nothing better to do, 0 of 5 play if you're a masochist. -1 of 5 avoid. Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders score is 3 of 5. Subjective Review Doom-like "chapter/level" progression. A level design that makes you feel like the developer actually wants you to finish/win the game. No "needle-in-the-haystack" hidden switches. Although the back-story is intriguing, there is very little in-game to bring it to mind. Still, had a blast playing this.
Out of all the build engine games I've played, this one is probably the most annoying one. You grab one key and 50 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ doors open around you as 5 quadrillion enemies swarm you. And you don't even need to grab keys to trigger ambushes. They ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ happen all the time. There's a wall behind a wall behind a wall full of enemies always ready to gangbang you However, I do enjoy the weapon types and the items. Changing the classical weapons into magical wands, or crossbows is a very neat idea, and some of the items are cool, especially the Tome of POWAAAHH. I do also wanna say I really dig the enemy designs
Shoot demons, err I mean mythical evils
