Fun game! The devs did a great job on this this one. everything is improved from the OG HLL i have 1400 hours on the og game this definitely stacks up.
Go Home G.I.
On the fence about playing this game and usually don't leave reviews, but this is one of the best games I have played in a long time.
Good game, but odd development choices post-launch. No Viet-Cong or traps, tunnels have a 10 minute cooldown now, stuff like that. Still worth getting in while the getting's good and people are playing as the prox chat is half of what makes the HLL games so good, although the VOIP is pretty buggy in this one. Lots of mechanical improvements since the WW2 HLL though.
I got to play for a crazy 5 whole minutes in game MAYBE. Crashes constantly, finally get it stable? Nah it'll run at 15 FPS have fun. $40 and there are still not enough non-VIP slots left for me? Stay away from this steaming pile.
Who like HLL normal, will like this too, because its very similiar but Vietnam and its very well done. Finally we can level again ;) Enjoy the Jungle and the Helicopters and tunnels.
(It seems like) this game is getting a lot of hate right now. But I've really been enjoying it. Its not perfect, but this was the first game in a while that actually delivered (for me) what I imagined prior to playing for the first time. What I like (that a lot of people have been complaining about): - "The game is less strategic than the first": Well yeah, its Vietnam. I don't think its actually less strategic, but I'm pretty confident the devs realized that war in Vietnam was more chaotic (in the strategic sense) than WW2. Also, a couple thousand people with no HLL experience wont help make the game feel strategic. These people will quickly disappear, or learn. - "The gun play sucks": Again, I'm glad its different. I think just like the first game, you can really hone in your skills with your firearm. And the multi-hit to kill factor is a lot of fun and makes gun fights longer lasting and more intense. - "It's all just bushes! I never see the enemy!": AGAIN, how can you be surprised. I will admit that the bush warfare can get a bit stale, but 90% of the time, I really enjoy it. It allows for more troop movement, which keeps the game feeling 'lively' and exciting. I also like the suspense of hearing or spotting a glimpse of someone near you. Just like the first game, you need to learn and be methodical with how you move through the map. Other things I'm happy with: - Sound design (yes there are currently some glitches): If your underwater, and someone uses VOIP on the shore line, their voice is distorted similarly to real life. - Graphics: This game really 'pops' compared to the first game. The foliage and light has some great improvements. - Kind of already said this, but the faster, more chaotic gameplay. It definitely makes Vietnam stand on its own two feet. I'll always like the first game, and will continue to play it, cause I will admit I also sometime like the more methodical gameplay, but I'd rather have two distinct games, than a copy and paste.
I love HLL but I am very disappointed they got rid of the quick skirmish matches. I literally cannot sit down and invest 90 minutes plus in a single match. Even offensive can run upwards of 2 and half hours. I don't have that kind of time with a family and while working. I may only have half an hour or so to play in the evenings. Its unfortunate because I love this game, but until they can add something that isn't so time consuming I just may have to quit playing. Because of this I cannot recommend this game to anyone that doesn't have an hour and half to invest in a single match at a time.
I really like the game so far. It feels like the OG HLL. I'm hopeful they bring in some of the most iconic Vietnam era weapons, but this is a great start. The game performs way better than it did during playtests. There are some annoyances like chopper guns not having a great range of motion, m16 having more recoil than it should, the US rocket launcher having the worst sights in any video game.
