Another 8-bit game in the tradition of Battle City and Iron Tank. Each of the ten levels is in some way substantially different while retianing the same basic gameplay. And it's pretty fun, sometimes tough but never unfair, once you've practiced the levels and gotten to know them. The game isn't too stingy with extra lives, and if you've lost too many you can always go back to the main menu and continue from the last level with the same number of lives you had when you first reached it. For more replayability, the game unlocks a new tank each time you beat it with a different tank, having a total of four. The light tank (the third one available) is the most fun to play as, making the gameplay faster and more frantic. Since the story is identical, for each tank, it might have been nice if it unlocked al the other ganks after the first playthough. Gameplay can be a little slow with the others, but not too much--the game stays true to its roots. Note that this is an ANTI-WAR game. The story is unusually dark and mature for games of this style. You play a severely wounded soldier. Each level is a PTSD-induced flashback, starting with your character waking up screaming until the doctors pmp him full of drugs. The story tackles war crimes and has a bleak, perhaps heavy-handed ending. An original take, not what you'd expect. The game isn't the best Battle Citty-style game on Steam. (It even has bugs, such as how in one level the men you have to kill can escape offscreen, forcing you to restart the level. Some of the achievements are near ipossible to get.) Any player who likes retro games can expect a couple hours of decent fun, as long as the story doesn't put htem off. I got it on sale for $0.49 and for the price consider it hardly perfect but more than satisfactory. I wouldn't pay full price for it, though.

https://youtu.be/EljzXqgaGco Twin stick tank combat that is locked to cardinal directions and very limited mobility runs out of steam quickly.
"Heavy Memories" is a 2D top down retro pixel (sigh) ripoff of Battle City, an ancient home console game, and it's very poorly done, with an academic and irrelevant question existing over what's the worst here, the graphics, or the gameplay. No matter which side wins, we all lost. What do you do in the game? It's a simplistic top down shooter with a bit of VN style narrative bolted on, that nobody asked for or wanted. The game is really simple and unambitious in terms of implementation, more of a tech demo or one of those cases where an amateur developer spends $100 to publish something on Steam Direct to see if it's possible. Yes, obviously it's possible. A proof of concept, tech demo, or something that's less than a little blip on the radar isn't offering anything truly valuable to gamers. This features really godawful pixelcrap "art" instead of real graphics. It's hard to say if this was because the developer didn't have the skill to do the job of creating 3D visuals, or couldn't afford to hire someone who does, but it also doesn't matter. What matters is that this looks much worse than most other games because of that decision, and that's a major deterrent to gamers. Games like Terraria and Stardew Valley succeeded despite the bad graphics, not because of them. This game is fairly dated at 7 years old... and even back then it looked old and busted compared to contemporary, professionally made 3D games of the same period. It looked bad then, it looks worse now. On the matter of pricing and value for gamers, most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's often nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Of course, just because something is free, doesn't necessarily mean it's valuable, or something you might want to spend your time on. There's no initial download price, but the developer was charging $5 USD for this. Price barriers, especially on low quality products, can be a direct cause of failure. It seems like a nice gesture for the game to have no up-front cost anymore, but it also tells us that the game wasn't good enough to succeed as a paid product. This is also a bit of a slap in the face to anyone who showed enough questionable judgement to pay money for this... nobody got refunded. Even after that, the developer is panhandling for a $2 USD soundtrack donation, this still isn't truly free. Despite having no up-front cost, this failed to appeal to the 120 million+ gamers on Steam. SteamDB showed the game peaked at only 3 concurrent players... this is a dismal public reception. This was so bad they couldn't even give it away. Bearing in mind that free games don't add +1 to your game collector count, should you bother adding this to your library and downloading it? Nope. This isn't worth downloading. There's no financial cost up-front, but you'd still be spending your time and a little hard drive space on a product that's far from the best. There's thousands of better alternatives on Steam.
