Is this a good halo game: Sure Should you buy this game: No It’s nearly full AAA price for a game that has now been released 3 times. All of us already know that this a cash grab. Even if you are a halo super fan you are unlikely to get your money’s worth from this game. With that said, is this now the definitive way to play halo 1? I’d say yes, the vast majority of people’s complaints about the gameplay are the typical whiny ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that will come with every halo release from 2012 unto the end of time. The graphical overhaul, level enhancements, and modern QoL changes (most of which are optional and can be turned off) outweigh what I deem small complaints such as a few voice lines that don’t have as great of an impact as the original, meleeing flood not having great feedback, and the bullet sponge brutes in the additional missions.
Just play MCC, or even better, play the original on the Xbox
Torn because some levels are beautiful. They put lots of effort into remaking the Silent Cartographer, used that as marketing, and didn't put much love into the rest of the game. Halo Reach notoriously had some of the most frustrating and poorly designed enemy AI in the franchise, and this game just copied and pasted Halo Reach's AI. LASO in this game is painful, and not for the same reason it normally is. The game freezes at random times, and most of the time it unfreezes fairly quickly. But about 90% of the way through a LASO mission, my game froze and did not unfreeze. Elites are inconsistent as hell (because Reach AI) so a lot of backsmacks will not kill them on one hit but they will hit you with an instant melee attack that kills you while they're looking the opposite direction. Brutes are also ridiculously inconsistent with backsmacks, and Hunters can't be one shot like the original, so the only real counterplay is hitting them in the back with an energy sword. If you're just picking it up to play Heroic or Legendary with a friend, get it on sale for at least 50% off. There is a reason that this studio got canned.
Game was so.... "Great" it finally closed Halo Studios. That's a massive win for the IP if you ask me.
I’m tired of my games being Woke. The prequel missions are so bad, I honestly had a better time playing Halo 4 Spartan Ops. Bring back OG Bungie devs and make Halo great again.
Complete garbage, just read the rest of the reviews, they mention everything wrong with the game. An insult to long time halo players and fans. It died with bungie, time to move on.
Absolute Crashfest.
They've learned absolutely nothing from the last 14 years. Microsoft is entirely to blame, with their genius system of hiring contractors and having the most braindead people on the planet in management. It was no surprise this was going to be negatively received by Halo fans. This game is simply an asset flip. It has reused Halo Infinite models for weapons, reused animations from Halo 5 and Halo Reach, and the AI behavior is straight up copied from Halo Reach. Like 1 for 1. The sound design is terrible to boot. The only good new sounds I think are the remixed assault rifle? Otherwise I have no idea who greenlit the most generic, flat sounding weapon sounds of all time. Of course, the environments look good, but that's the only thing UE5 games have going for them anyway. As with any UE5 game, they've forsaken identity and style for "realism." It's getting old. If you've played Halo Reach's campaign as much as other Halo fans have, you'll basically have all the AI behavior memorized and it's not fun or unique to fight or play around. This game is built on Halo Reach, and they took the laziest, most worthless approach to a new game yet in this franchise. Marines are worthless. They don't follow the player. Elites still have their 3 frame insta-kill melee animation. I think Hunters are the only ones with more aggressive AI differing from Halo Reach? Either way they have no self preservation and will straight up just shoot the ground in front of them, making them unfair and frustrating to fight. I'm a die-hard Halo fan. I want so badly to love this game and the franchise, and it's just been beaten out of me. I can't even bring myself to finish the main campaign, let alone the God awful prequel missions. 3 missions, an hour long each, with two of them just being "aimlessly clear through hallways until you get to big room. Wave defense, then aimlessly clear through hallways with absolutely no objective or flair to make it worth doing. Repeat. They're entirely forgettable and a flat out worthless addition to this game. I'm not even going to talk about over-monetized skins in a single player campaign. If you're looking for a great fresh take on a Halo CE campaign, I can recommend two phenomenal mods: one for Steam MCC, "Havoc Mod" on the workshop. And two, "SPV3" for Halo Custom Edition. (I think you can download it using MCC Combat Evolved but it's not on workshop.) This game isn't worth your time let alone your money. Pirate it if you so badly want to experience this nightmare and kicking-of the long dead, rotten, desiccated horse that is the Halo franchise.
Buy this when it's on sale for 10-20$ beyond that, just stick to the MCC port. In game this version LOOKS nice but just about every other aspect falls short of the original. In the future when I feel like replaying the 1st game this wont be what comes to mind.
....this game a ruined halo for me, just stick to halo mcc, you'll have a better time there
