Is this a good halo game: Sure Should you buy this game: No It’s nearly full AAA price for a game that has now been released 3 times. All of us already know that this a cash grab. Even if you are a halo super fan you are unlikely to get your money’s worth from this game. With that said, is this now the definitive way to play halo 1? I’d say yes, the vast majority of people’s complaints about the gameplay are the typical whiny ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that will come with every halo release from 2012 unto the end of time. The graphical overhaul, level enhancements, and modern QoL changes (most of which are optional and can be turned off) outweigh what I deem small complaints such as a few voice lines that don’t have as great of an impact as the original, meleeing flood not having great feedback, and the bullet sponge brutes in the additional missions.
A poor imitation of a beloved classic, and a complete waste of time and money.
I love DEI, yay . . . . screw you 343. You guys do know how to mess up a classic
Halo: Friendslop Devolved, because the overwhelming majority of what little enjoyment I did get from this game, came from the fact I was playing it with a friend. The use of AI for the cutscenes is downright uncanny, with awkward pauses, poses, transitions, and more, that feel like they let chatgpt storyboard the whole game from prequel to end, and then they rushed to animate over the slop without fixing any of the glaring inconsistencies. The prequel writing feels like something straight out of a YouTube shorts advertisement made with AI, I wasn't sure if the prophet of harmony was gonna keep monologuing about the different covenant species or try and sell me a mobile game. It wouldn't be an honest review if I only called out what sucks, though, so I will give credit where it's due. Level design. The changes made to the more infamous areas from the original are a welcome surprise, and the level of detail especially regarding the Flood infested sections was rich, it's a beautiful game and it plays well, but so were the other 343 halos, and we all know how poor writing can tank an otherwise decent game. The new and reworked weapons make up for that glaring lack that the original game had in comparison to its successors, they're fun to use and handle well, but given how the rest of the game is set up they feel more like a copout to lure in fans of the weapons more than the story itself. So, should you buy this game? In my personal opinion, no, unless you have friends to play it with, and care more about that than the game itself. If you're a diehard fan of yhe story who solos every campaign for the immersion, just let this one go, you're gonna be sorely disappointed. In this day and age, a game like this isn't worth the price point to retell a story wrong with fancier guns and graphics for the same price point and half the gameplay as the game it's trying to replicate. And even if you do just want a game to play with friends, go buy big walk, it'll hold your attention longer and more consistently.
They've learned absolutely nothing from the last 14 years. Microsoft is entirely to blame, with their genius system of hiring contractors and having the most braindead people on the planet in management. It was no surprise this was going to be negatively received by Halo fans. This game is simply an asset flip. It has reused Halo Infinite models for weapons, reused animations from Halo 5 and Halo Reach, and the AI behavior is straight up copied from Halo Reach. Like 1 for 1. The sound design is terrible to boot. The only good new sounds I think are the remixed assault rifle? Otherwise I have no idea who greenlit the most generic, flat sounding weapon sounds of all time. Of course, the environments look good, but that's the only thing UE5 games have going for them anyway. As with any UE5 game, they've forsaken identity and style for "realism." It's getting old. If you've played Halo Reach's campaign as much as other Halo fans have, you'll basically have all the AI behavior memorized and it's not fun or unique to fight or play around. This game is built on Halo Reach, and they took the laziest, most worthless approach to a new game yet in this franchise. Marines are worthless. They don't follow the player. Elites still have their 3 frame insta-kill melee animation. I think Hunters are the only ones with more aggressive AI differing from Halo Reach? Either way they have no self preservation and will straight up just shoot the ground in front of them, making them unfair and frustrating to fight. I'm a die-hard Halo fan. I want so badly to love this game and the franchise, and it's just been beaten out of me. I can't even bring myself to finish the main campaign, let alone the God awful prequel missions. 3 missions, an hour long each, with two of them just being "aimlessly clear through hallways until you get to big room. Wave defense, then aimlessly clear through hallways with absolutely no objective or flair to make it worth doing. Repeat. They're entirely forgettable and a flat out worthless addition to this game. I'm not even going to talk about over-monetized skins in a single player campaign. If you're looking for a great fresh take on a Halo CE campaign, I can recommend two phenomenal mods: one for Steam MCC, "Havoc Mod" on the workshop. And two, "SPV3" for Halo Custom Edition. (I think you can download it using MCC Combat Evolved but it's not on workshop.) This game isn't worth your time let alone your money. Pirate it if you so badly want to experience this nightmare and kicking-of the long dead, rotten, desiccated horse that is the Halo franchise.
....this game a ruined halo for me, just stick to halo mcc, you'll have a better time there
This game is a terrible janky mirror image of a great game. It's only positive is that it looks nice. They made it clunky for no reason. Large delays when switching weapons or using melee before you can fire. Enemy melee attacks sometimes don't even have animations and will just kill you from ten feet away. The starting extra missions are just nothing. They read like fanfiction or ai generated slop. They added in extra dialogue where there didn't need to be and it most of the time just made things corny. Me and my friends had more fun reading funny/interesting sounding names in the end credits. TLDR Don't get it even on sale unless major changes are made and even then not at full price. Wait for a steep sale.
The sound seems muffled for the weapons along with the enemies being able to punch you from a distance and sometimes no animation at all. The cut scenes honestly felt AI generated and very...cringe? Graphics were nice but honestly the lighting in the game needs work and smoothing particle effects. Constant crashes will be fixed im sure as its very early. Overall would not recommend this to anyone in its current state. Even Nostalgia couldnt save it for me and my friends.
My very first Halo games with modern visual element.
wait for sale. nothing special. just another way to get you to buy the same thing for the 5th time. not bad but not worth the launch price
