If you're set on playing this, wait for a $5 or $10 sale, but for that price, MCC is still the better buy.
I'm having a ton of fun with this game. Not sure if it's worth $50 though - the prequel campaign sort of sucks, and sometimes updates introduce new bugs. I'm getting vibe-coded energy from these patches. Otherwise, frametime and FPS are very good, and the enhanced graphics are UE5 stunning. The Library actually doesn't suck now, and small things such as sprinting & vehicle jacking make things a little more fun. Also love that we can use the energy sword & fuel rod cannon in campaign too. I do wish we at least had CTF / Deathmatch modes/maps from original CE. It feels really strange that those are absent from the remake given that they shipped back with original release. We'll see how hard LASO is once I finish finding the skulls (why oh why do I need skulls from the prequel missions for core campaign LASO?..) Recommended - but on sale. I think you'd be hard pressed to find issue with this game if it was $20-$30.
I don't know why everyone is hating on this game.
Great job Halo Studios. Now give us the Halo 2 and Halo 3 Remake.
This is a 'mixed' at best, but halo Studios does not deserve the benefit of the doubt so negative it is. I made a post a few weeks before release where I mentioned my concerns about the game, and most of them came true. The developers had everything done for them, the story, gameplay mechanics, level design, and script, so what did they spend all there time doing? Not much is the answer. After their history, they had to pull out all stops while remaking CE, but they did not. Claiming this is an Evolved Campaign is a blatant lie, it is pretty much the same game. Not even something as simple as campaign scoring was added. The Spirit dropships are still invincible, another thing that they could have easily improved on. The cinematics are also poorly framed, with some very out of place dialogue. There are several examples of this, but the top three offenders are the opening where Johnson is giving the motivational speech to the marines and the camera creepily lingers on his face. The second is still in the opening, where Johnson again is talking to the marines that have engaged the Covenant at the airlocks. The third, is where the Prophet is introducing the Covenant one by one... This whole scene is garbage. Visuals, action, dialogue. Who wrote this scene, who QA this scene? The three bonus missions are incredibly weak overall and add nothing of value to the game what so ever. The first mission also bugged three times while I played it for the first time forcing me to restart it each time. This is at best worth 20 Euro, asking 80 Euro for a Deluxe edition that has paper thin 'content' is so predatory. So many of my childhood games have been remade recently and overall they have been pretty great, Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Dead Space, Tomb Raider. I have held faith since Halo 4 that the franchise would eventually right itself, were it so easy...
There are 3 things a game can be. The first is amazing. The second is disappointing. And the third is so bad, it’s good. Halo: Combat Evolved is the second one. It’s not bad enough to make fun of, but it’s not good enough to call it a good game either. It fails at being a remake of the original Combat Evolved. It fails at being a good Halo game. It only succeeds at being a fun shooter. A lot of what made the original Combat Evolved special has been completely castrated here. Going out of bounds and exploring the maps doesn’t matter anymore because a multiplayer-style countdown starts and instantly kills you if you don’t return to the mission. Something the original games were very much against. They even hid secret weapons out of bounds because they knew players would explore. This game doesn’t. The dialogue and story have also been rewritten in a way that feels completely soulless. And as somebody who has played all of the games, hearing Cortana tell me how to crouch or how to kill an enemy from behind, as if I were eight years old, feels insulting. It also doesn’t help that accessibility settings like text to speech are enabled by default. So I do get the feeling that Halo Studios thinks we, the players, are genuinely disabled for playing their games. There are countless other negative things I could say, but I don’t want to write a 50-page novel, so let’s talk about the positives. As a shooter, and just as a game on its own, it’s fun. The game is built on Halo Reach’s engine, so naturally the combat and physics feel great. Unreal Engine was mainly used for the graphical side of things, and it shows. The game looks gorgeous. I might not agree with every art-style decision, but at least it looks like Halo. I also like that a lot of weapons from the sequels have been added, and content-wise, the game is packed. That’s something I really appreciate in modern games, since most are lacking in content these days. It’s just unfortunate that the negatives outweigh the positives. I hope to God Microsoft gets their ♥♥♥♥ together and gives the IP to a studio that is better managed and actually cares about the franchise. Now, is all of this harsh on my end? Yes. But it’s because I’m passionate. I’ve cared about this franchise for a long time. But I’m also realistic. This isn’t a bad game by any means, and I still have yet to finish it. But the state it launched in, the problems it still has, the baffling decisions, and, on top of all that, the fact that it even exists… Like, seriously, what the ♥♥♥♥ was the point of remaking the original game besides money? Nobody asked for it. Thank God I got this gifted to me. Otherwise, I would have pirated it.
I don't get the hate for this game. I'm having fun and It's running fine on my pc. I just wish Cortana didn't look like a dude.
over hated.
