Gnomes on the Roam is a pretty funny idea for a horde shooter. I am basically trying to survive against waves of interdimensional gnomes that have come to our world because they used up the energy from their own sun. Their plan is to take our sunlight instead, which gives me a pretty good reason to start shooting them. I like how silly the story is because the game clearly does not take itself too seriously. The main gameplay is about surviving endless rounds while the gnomes keep getting harder to deal with. I start with a pistol and can find an assault rifle during the game, which gives me a little more firepower as the waves get tougher. The shooting is simple and easy to understand, and I like that I can focus on moving around and keeping the enemies away rather than worrying about a huge number of complicated systems. The plant mechanic is probably the part that gives it a bit more personality. I can find seeds around the map and plant them so the plants can help me fight the gnomes. I like the idea because it gives me something to do between the shooting and makes the environment feel more useful. It also fits the strange nature of the game quite well. I am not just standing around with a gun waiting for enemies, I am also trying to make the area work in my favour. There is also a secret way to actually win the game by harnessing the power of the sun. I liked having this because otherwise an endless horde mode can start feeling like I am only chasing a higher survival time. Knowing there is another objective gives me something to look for while I am fighting. It also makes the map worth exploring instead of simply staying in one safe spot and waiting for the next wave. The biggest weakness for me is that the basic loop can get repetitive pretty quickly. There are only two weapons mentioned in the main gameplay and the whole experience is built around surviving increasingly difficult waves. The plants help break things up, but I still wanted more weapon variety and more ways to change my strategy as the rounds went on. The game also feels like a small university project, which makes sense because it was created as a third year Games Production project. There is a good amount of effort here, but it does not have the depth of a much larger horde shooter. I do like the presentation though. Everything was made by the developer apart from two sound effects, and the colourful cartoony look fits the ridiculous gnome invasion perfectly. It is also completely free, so I do not feel like I am being asked to overlook the smaller scope in exchange for a full price purchase. There is only English support and it is Windows only, but that is not really a problem for me if I already meet those requirements. Overall, I think Gnomes on the Roam is a fun little shooter with a silly concept and a few good ideas of its own. The endless waves work well enough, the plant system gives the combat some extra personality and the hidden way to finish the game gives me a reason to explore. I would have liked more weapons, enemy variety and progression because the core shooting loop does become repetitive, but I still enjoyed what is here. For a free project, I think it is worth a look if I want something simple where I can shoot ridiculous little gnomes for a while. Rating: 7.2/10
