Now that’s some janky eurojank right there!
As far as Eurojank clones of the first Far Cry go, this is no Pirate Hunter (which seriously rocks, go check that out) but if you can tolerate the occasionally herculean effort it takes just to get this game running it is actually worthwhile, especially since it's free. The game's first impression is not good and I was pleasantly surprised how much better it gets after that first level or two. You start out in some kind of drug boat with an AK47, your team is there to raid the operation and naturally they meet unexpected opposition on what's supposed to be a "routine" operation. That first level is rough. The AK47 is stiff and does not feel good to shoot whatsoever. Aiming is a little clunky at first but after messing with the mouse sensitivity I got it dialed into something acceptable. You have several "comrades" with you in that first level, but none of them actually move or say anything. At that point I was thinking "if the enemies are actually capable of walking this game will have exceeded my expectations and surprisingly they do! The first level is very small and cramped with a lot of copied and pasted rooms and bad design choices like spawning enemies in behind you. There's a part where you have to climb a ladder then awkwardly jump off the latter to enter an opening behind the ladder which is both obtuse to figure out and awkward to accomplish due to the game's clunky physics. It's a good thing this game has regenerating health too, because that first level basically has tons of dudes waiting for you the second you enter a room and their reflexes are fast. Lots of walking in and getting spammed by hitscanners before I acclimitized to the game's pace and style, but as long as you corner-peek you can get by. Fortunately that's the worst of it though, the game really begins proper with the first island level at which point being sneaky and picking off bad guys unnoticed becomses much more of an option. Most enemies carry an M16 which is significantly more enjoyable to use than the AK47 and is actually fun to shoot, and since it's so common ammo is never an issue. The shotgun and sniper rifle also feel pretty good, so it's really that starter AK and the Beretta that are the duds of the arsenal. The only truly bad level is Level 7, which is an identical repeat of level 6 except at night and it's so dark that you can't really see where any of the enemies are without catch a case of severe eyes strain. It wouldn't be so bad if they gave you some night vision goggles, but the flashlight barely extends past arm's length. The night level doesn't even make sense in the game's own context because you go through a door at the end of it, then the next level starts on the other side of the door so clearly no time has passed, but that next level is blatantly set at midday. I'd kinda let it slide if it was dawn or early morning, but the sun's clearly been up for a while by level 8. After that you do get a couple of the more indoor Half-Life-esque levels that don't crash on reload and the final boss (who I only barely recognized as a boss by the simple fact he took more hits than the normal enemies and had a unique character model) is mercifully in a level that doesn't crash. The enemies aren't exactly the brightest, they tend to clump together and walk in straight lines in these bigger open areas, but I enjoyed moving slowly and picking them off in the Far Cry style. I like the goofy way the flop over when killed and generally firefights are enjoyable even if the open levels occasionally do the cheap "spawn a bad guy behind you even if there's no way they could have gotten there" nonsense. It's still not as bad as those initial levels on the boat. For whatever reason the hard-coded subtitles on the first cutscene are also given a black background, and there's so much text in that first cutscene that half the screen ends up being blacked-out by the words, though thankfully the rest of the cutscenes have a more traditional way of showing the subtitles. That opening scene kind of looks like an Epstien file though with how much of it is covered in black rectangles. The plot is fairly simple, you're some kind of anti-drug taskforce trying to take down some kind of cartel. Around halfway they mention the cartel takes their hostages to "the lab" and they don't come back so I was expecting some kind of sci-fi plot twist where you'd suddenly be fighting monsters, but no such twist ever comes although I do wonder if that was the original plan. Unfortunately this is a Eurojank so sometimes the biggest challenge is just getting the game to run. For the first few levels it seemed reasonably stable and I was surprised that it looks okay in Widescreen (though anything above 1080p will make the UI tiny), but past that this game chrases a lot. Doing some digging on the Steam forums it appears to be an issue with the large open world levels, if you die in one of them and try to reload a quicksave, the game will crash. If you beat level 4 and go into level 5, it will crash, etc. You'll need to follow both Steam Guides in the community tab to even make the game playable. One guide has a patch that shifts the cutscenes to play at the end of a level rather than the start (so you can see them before the game crashes), and the other guide (which is in Russian) basically provides save files at the start of each level so you can load the level since trying to transition to it from the previous level causes a crash. I think I probably spent more time re-launching the game than actually playing it, but it is mercifully short. "The game crashes if you die" is at least some incentive to play well I suppose. It is worth taking some time to shout out the Old Fort add-on which is included here and is genuinely better than the base game. It's a bit of a Die Hard type scenario where you fight your way out of a prison and then a town. It starts out rough in a similar way to the base game, with the initial area of the prison being way too dark and saddling you with the crappy beretta, but once you get topside the level design is surprisingly good and visually these levels are much better than anything in the base game. The expansion thankfully doesn't crash when reloading so I was finally able to to enjoy the game without having to fiddle with it, though I did encounter a new bug where the flashlight makes enemies' skin invisible (but their clothes still move around). I tend to wonder if it's because I enabled "projected shadows" for the add-on which I didn't have enabled for the base game because it didn't seem to make a difference. Anyway, the level design in the add-on is incredibly strong, it still has the same cheap enemy spawns where they pop up in improbable places, but the layout and flow is a lot better and there's a lot more handcrafted detail to the town compared to the wide-open landscapes with a few wooden huts that made up most of the base game's levels. It has that feeling of good golden-age brush-based level design and the town itself has an impressive sense of scale. I imagine the levels are technically smaller since they don't crash the engine, but they feel bigger because they're less repetitive and more densely packed with detail. There's no cutscenes or voice acting for the add-on so it kind of just stops when you reach the end, but it's a genuine display of craftsmanship and level design talent that's well worth experiencing. Eurojank is oftentimes defined by having more ambition than execution and in this case that ambition exceeded the scope of what the game's own engine could handle. This is for serious jank connoisseurs only but if you don't mind the obscene amount of crashing and re-opening the game it actually is a fun little game with some good weapons that you can blow through in an afternoon or two.
