I'd completely forgotten about this until I played a Multiplayer game that is *extremely* similar called "Nuclear Nightmare". This game is great for being a free game. If you have the time to kill and want to play something horror-themed and Sci-Fi plus you enjoy finding little notes and easter-eggs (like you would in Resident Evil or Silent Hill, etc.) then I'd say this is a game you wouldn't want to pass up. A heads-up though, it can be slow at times in terms of your character movement.
nice entertainment for an hour or two. EDIT: I completed the game on Fedora 44 (Linux).
FROSTBITE: Deadly Climate —

I found out about this game from comment made by the dev himself back when I watched HarshlyCritical (later on John Wolfe), but it barely ran on my crappy laptop and I couldn't finish it. Now that I FINALLY finished, I got to say, it's both a cute and pretty well made love letter to The Thing (1982 remake) and Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason. It keeps you extremely on edge, and it sometimes feels like you'll die before your timer runs out. I'm glad it ended on an ambiguous but good note, even if the dev probably wished he could do something more with it.
It's a simple but fun indie game. Obviously inspired by The Thing. There's not much to it. You explore the research base, finding keys that open different rooms, allowing you to progress. Unlike other games with cold mechanics, you are always freezing here. You survive by collecting and crafting 'drinks' that warm you up, boost your stamina, and regenerate your health. There are a limited amount of items in the world. Because of this, you don't quite get to explore at your own pace. That element was annoying, but I can forgive it since the game is pretty short. The horror element is gone once you understand the enemy. Most enemies can be defeated by walking backwards and stunlocking them with the axe. They can't open doors, and the dog that spawns when you get the shotgun can't climb the stairs. It's pretty goofy. There is a mechanic that allows you to sneak by them if your temperature is low, but generally it doesn't work because of the confined nature of the base; They'll sense you regardless. The only enemies you can reliably sneak by is the guy on the roof and both dogs. Being that cold is very situational and generally not worth it since you lose health very fast. I played through it 4 times. The first was the most enjoyable experience. The second was on easy to see how fast I could go. The third was on normal to earn most of the achievements. The last was on nightmare difficulty. Items and enemies always spawn in the same locations so there's no surprises on subsequent playthroughs. Overall I enjoyed my time with this short game, but I think Near Death is a more challenging and much better arctic survival experience.
This game leaves you at a dead end when finding a code, and even if you try and guess it it will not work you have to find the clue first.
This was a fun little game. Not really scary, just a few ice monster/people in certain spots. I can admire it's simplicity while also forcing you to keeping an eye on your health, body temperature and the room temperature. It also forces you to prioritize what specific chemical to make (health, stamina or heat drink). My only issues are the fighting mechanics, most of the hits wouldn't register. Frequently. Shouldn't take me ten times to hit a dog. There were also points where (because I've played it over and over and knew where certain ones would spawn) the people weren't there? I guess? While I'm sure it was just a bug, I completed Nightmare mode and when I did save I made sure to fill my heat and health before saving. When I had to resume the checkpoint, both were at half. Man, that made it even worse to do.
