[h2]At first glance, it's a typical copy of Fears to Fathom, but the interesting things here are sometimes good screamers, although predictable, the graphics are different from other Fears to Fathom clones, which looks beautiful, and what I liked most was the denouement of the game with such a simple and realistic explanation💀

Fragments of Dread: False Haven is a short psychological horror game that I found surprisingly effective with how little it actually needs to do. I play as Luca, a young boy staying with his grandmother while his parents are away. Things seem fairly normal at first, but after a disturbing phone call the whole situation starts feeling wrong. I really liked how the game takes an ordinary night and slowly turns it into something much more unsettling. The exploration is simple, with me walking around the house, picking up objects and interacting with things that might help me understand what is happening. There are also small puzzles that give me something to work out instead of making the whole experience just walking from one room to another. I enjoyed searching through the house because the environment gradually becomes more suspicious as I notice things that do not seem quite right. The atmosphere is easily the strongest part for me. The VHS inspired presentation gives the game that uncomfortable feeling of watching something that should not exist, while the sound design does a lot to build tension. I liked that the horror does not rely on constant jumpscares. Instead, the game gives me time to become uncomfortable with the situation and wonder whether Luca can actually trust the person who is supposed to be looking after him. The story also works because it keeps the mystery fairly personal. The question of whether Luca's grandmother is really who she claims to be is enough to make ordinary conversations feel suspicious. I found myself paying attention to small changes in the environment and trying to work out what was real. There are some surreal moments and twists that I think work better when experienced without knowing too much beforehand, so I would definitely recommend going into it without looking up the story. My biggest problem is the length. False Haven is very short, and once I reached the end I definitely wanted more. The story establishes an interesting situation but does not have a huge amount of time to explore it. Some of the interactions and puzzles are also quite simple, so anyone looking for a deep survival horror experience might find it lacking. For me, though, the short length works reasonably well because the game stays focused on its atmosphere instead of stretching the idea out. I also like that this is clearly the beginning of an episodic series. False Haven tells its own story while leaving me interested in what the developer might do with future episodes. The fact that it is free makes the whole thing even easier to recommend. It feels like a small horror experience that I can finish in one sitting without having to commit to a much larger game. Overall, Fragments of Dread: False Haven is a creepy little horror game that I enjoyed mainly because of its atmosphere and slow build up of paranoia. I liked exploring the house, dealing with the simple puzzles and slowly questioning whether everything around Luca could be trusted. It is definitely too short for me to call it a fully developed horror adventure, but the VHS presentation and psychological approach give it plenty of personality. For a free game, I think it is well worth playing if I enjoy short horror experiences that focus more on dread than constant action. Rating: 7.3/10
