An epic dark fantasy where fates are decided by mighty Eikons and the Dominants who wield them. This is the tale of Clive Rosfield, a tragic warrior who swears revenge on the Dark Eikon Ifrit, a mysterious entity that leaves naught but calamity in its wake.

This is something grand and beautiful, but I can't bring myself to call it a game. Maybe it's an animated movie where you're occasionally asked to press X. Maybe it's some kind of show. But it's not a game. Most of the time, you're either watching a barrage of bright flashes during the "big moments", or, during the ordinary ones, simply walking from one point to another without the slightest possibility of choosing where to go. This isn't a game. It's a game-shaped product. Something pretending to be a game. Like kindergarten kids playing astronauts without actually being astronauts.
Graphics are beautiful. Voice acting is decent. Plot and world are much more grounded and less whimsical than is typical for FF (though they go a little overboard with having everyone dying all the time); I haven't decided what I think about that, but they do a good job writing characters' dialogue and actions to match their reasonable motivations for the world that they're in. In that sense the world feels more thoughtfully self-consistent than any other mainline FF game. All in all, the non-core-gameplay fundamentals exceed expectations. The problem is it's a walking simulator with a shallow action-combat-minigame stapled to it: there is no meaningful skill expression and no challenge to be overcome. Best available weapons and gear at any given time are just made available without effort or tradeoff. Combat is all generic action-game 'press this button to close distance and hit, press this button with the right timing to perfect dodge' stuff; enemies who are supposed to be trained soldiers will hang back and maybe move in to take a feeble swing once every five seconds or so, like generic mooks in a Batman game. In the event you actually manage to lose to a boss, they'll just drop you back into the same phase of the same fight with replenished curative items; you just respawn with the boss already down to 25% health or whatever, so you don't have to improve or re-strategize or anything. In case that's not enough, combat-trivializing easy-mode-accessories are dropped into your inventory at the very beginning even when you choose the 'action-focused' mode, as though the game doesn't think its own combat is worth engaging with either. In other words, the gameplay part of the game is actually a complete formality, and the game seems apologetic for even interposing this quantum of gameplay between the endless series of cutscenes it actually wants to feed you. If they wanted to make a movie they should have just made a movie. A final fantasy game in which the entire *game* part is a challenge-free facade cannot be accepted. It's unfortunate, because there really are lots of cool features and work that have been done here in here; just the lore-navigation interface is a fascinating and innovative little thing, and I don't want to discount the work that was poured into various aspects of this title. But games need to have *gameplay*, and no amount of polish can make up for that omission.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ optimization, decent storyline, hellish slow pacing, fun combat but that's basically it. out of the 54 hours ive put into this game, only 8/10 were actual gameplay time. mediocre game at best, didnt even bother to try the dlcs after the mainstoryline really wanted to recommend this one since i love clive as a character and his voice actor but the game itself doesnt live up to the price
Honestly, this doesn't feel like an FF game. It feels like a western developer got sub-contracted to create the game however they want, as long as they keep to the theme of having crystals and certain characters. The story itself is fine, but the gameplay just feels unsatisfactory. Action itself is fine, but there is a complete lack of party mechanics and customization save for the skills (which is very very limited). You have no control over other characters' equipment or skills. how they fight, their health... Zero, nothing! And your own character's equipment is simply a linear progression without any choices. Accessories have minimal impact on combat. Even free gacha games like Genshin Impact has more depth than this game. And the graphics optimization is atrocious. I could play FFVII rebirth without any issue at all, but this game keeps giving me single digit framerate when I fast travel to Lostwing and Eastpool. Only get this game at a discount, not at full price!
Probably the best FF game I've ever played. One of the best single-player RPGs I've ever played as well, SPECIFICALLY from a story/lore perspective. The combat is **fine**. This is a cutscene simulator through and through, but if that's your jam then you'll love this. There's actually so much going on in the story and with all of the character development that it keeps the game moving very quickly. I think the devs realized if they dragged out any single encounter more than normal (like it feels with most games), the game would take hundreds of hours to complete. This keeps the game feeling fresh and not a chore. I put 30 hours into NieR:Automata and I was ready to be done with it at 30 hours, even though I enjoyed it immensely. It feels like I could put another 60 into FFXVI before I'd be ready to put it down, even though the combat is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I haven't finished the game at the time of this review. I don't expect any major decisions to be made on my part. It's literally a cutscene simulator with seemingly mindless tab-targeting button-mashing combat between each.
故事還行 演出很好 戰鬥有點微妙 然後滿GAY的 真的
I love ff series, but this is so casual adn boring. The game is so afraid to be challenging, it literally picks items from the ground for you, enemies just stand and wait for you to kill them, and then the game gives special items to make it even easier! it's just a slog not worth time and money. And not worthy of final fantasy name.
I really want to love this game. It's gorgeous, the combat is flashy, and the Eikon battles are #epic. But every time something fun and exciting happens, it's followed by long stretches of fetch quests and repetitive side content that just kills the pacing. I've also never seen so many cutscenes in a game. I still want to finish it, but it's a drag. At least Clive is hot <3
