I can't, in good conscience, genuinely recommend this game to anyone. The overall experience is plagued with so many issues that I question whether or not this was even fully play-tested. Additionally, I am stuck being baffled as to who would ever greenlight this with a sober mind. I am trying to be somewhat comical but overall I am being quite earnest in my initial statement. I'll start with the good in this game as it is the shortest of the two. Good: -The main story (when you are actually at key points and not in fetch quests) can be good and entertaining. -Eikon fights are the absolute highlight of the game and quite literally the only thing that kept me going. -Graphically this game is aesthetically pleasing and performance was never an issue on my end with some decently old hardware now. -The mature tone of the story not necessarily anything new to Final Fantasy but it's implemented well here. Bad: -The story pacing is the most god-awfully executed in any final fantasy to date. The ball was dropped so bad here that I have no idea how anyone could fathomably defend it. Literal hours between any of the interesting parts that could possibly keep your attention or the spectacular moments i.e., eikon fights. You will literally get to the point (if you make it long enough) that you want the game to just be over. This is an absolute tragedy since the game, I would argue, starts off so incredibly strong but fails to keep up the momentum or follow suite with the expectations it sets. -Side quests: these are all effectively fetch quests, kill a monster, group of trash mobs. You can get some minor benefits from completing these but you will save numerous hours by simply skipping them. This literally even pervades the story in excess to the point that they shouldn't have even included them. -Enemy variety is so piss-poor you will feel like you could count the actual enemy types with your fingers alone even if you were missing some fingers. -Combat feels so uninspired. The experience is nice at first as it seemingly expands once you start gaining eikon abilities but you will find what works and literally are not incentivized to change as there are no elemental weaknesses to speak of. I can't speak to how dull combat becomes but I may be biased as I am coming from playing the Devil May Cry series and Bayonetta. The combat is analogous to either of those series if they were stripped down to just being a proof of concept and not even fleshed out 10%. -Items and gear help so marginally that this system is an overall afterthought. Even with improved gear the game doesn't feel any different in any regard. -There is such a lack of variety in voices outside the main characters and antagonists you will think you are spiraling down into the pits of disparity. -Goetz is outright annoying beyond belief, for such a minor character to be the "gentle giant big guy that is a big sissy" they could have at least made his voice and neuroticism bearable. -The main base hub of the game is spread out to the point that walking around it feels like a chore and you spend a decent time here throughout the story. While there are story mechanisms and reasons for the base being how it is, this translates poorly to gameplay and experience. -Gameplay difficulty is pathetically easy. The game does not want you to fail and I feel as though you really don't have to try once you literally get the same ability rotation down that you will naturally gravitate towards in every fight. I genuinely can't recommend this game to anyone in good conscience. I love the series as a whole, hell I get ♥♥♥♥ for liking the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy and I never would have guessed we could get worse than that. If you must play this game, you better not spend any money on this and receive it as a gift. Worst case scenario you buy it heavily discounted at least 90% with all DLC but even then I believe you may be wasting your time. Many people seem to still love this game, but I fail to see how despite the positives. If you want a numerical value then this is roughly a 3/10. The eikon fights are literally the biggest positive this game has to offer.
I love final fantasy and bought this game in hopes of a good game, the upside it the story seemed to be good, but the hand holding is so extensive that I decided to run an experiment. I put on the rings it said for difficult fights on, and then set the controller down and did not touch it... Literally the character perfectly dodged every time and his compatriots fought the battle for him and... won. The game literally plays itself, no input is needed from the user... But that's not a game... I came for a game and found none... Not worth the money I paid for it. Auto item pick up, auto combat, and auto defense... that's not a game, that's a movie where you have to hold a joy stick down... I've actually seen better interactive movies on Netflix... So I lost all desire to play the non existent game. Why Is this a thing? no idea, but I wanted a game, not a movie with extra steps, so I'm out and can't recommend this to anyone. Could I ignore the rings? yes, but that tells me everything I need to know, the combat is not going to be challenging, and the game play is going to feel cheap and as if someone else is doing it for you. It's pathetic and done to please reviewers, not actual players.
Try the demo and then switch to playing whatever thing that first pops into your head it feels like its ripping off instead and you'll probably have a better time.
This has to be the worst final fantasy yet by a distance. I thought the bottom of the barrel had been reached with that squawk fest Rebirth but no. It starts with exciting stuff but the pace just drops off a cliff. It's a soulless mess. Everything is so average or weak - combat, story, acting, art style, side quests, level design, music. I once loved this franchise and I keep returning like some old junkie but the good times are gone man. Well gone. Last one I really enjoyed was FF12. That was 20 years ago. I'm moving on.
The character has a very good British accent and a mind-blowing, insane amount of actions; the fight scenes are absolutely peak. Highly recommend this game 9.5/10.
I've played Final Fantasy games my whole life, and this one is one of my favorites. FFXVI encapsulates what Final Fantasy is all about- taking the series to bold new directions while paying homage to the series origins. This time, Final Fantasy molds Devil May Cry-esc gameplay with a ~50 hour story full of political drama and some of the most memorable characters the series has ever seen. I don't say this lightly- this is the most hype videogame I've ever played. The fights can be so insane it literally made my jaw drop. Some of the best boss fights I've ever experienced in a video game. I think what I respect the most about FFXVI is that it had a vision, and it stuck with that vision and it executed it wonderfully. It knows what it wants to be, and it's awesome. Give it a try.
I don't know what the hell I just played, seriously. Not one character sparked any real interest. It's a few months after the fact and I couldn't tell you anything meaningful about them. This isn't final fantasy. I can recount damn near everything about 5,6,7,8,9, X, hell even X2! But this game? Not one memorable moment, not a single dialogue I cared to read, there wasn't a single ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ good thing about this I could say, not one. A hundred hours ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wasted on this garbage release. The entire game was boring, no depth, "bland" is an overstatement of the main cast and I could have gotten everything that was "good" from the trailers. The voice acting sucked, no emotion whatsoever, no sense of urgency. Literally zero things about this game kept me coming back. I couldn't skip dialogue fast enough! Stop turning my beloved franchise into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ show Square, you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dolts. I'd rather put my ♥♥♥♥ in a meat grinder than suffer through this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ slop again. I don't know how anyone can get through it. FF7 remakes: Fail FFXVI: Fail You might actually be a real life idiot if you think this is a good game worthy of it's namesake. Keep on stacking up the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ losses Square. I don't know who it is letting this ♥♥♥♥ out the gate, but they need to be replaced.
