Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is arguably the peak of the tactical JRPG genre—this isn’t really up for debate. Its standout system is class mastery and unlocking new jobs, which is exactly what draws people into this kind of game. With over 20 classes, each offering different skill sets, the game promises a huge number of possible combinations, making every character feel unique in theory. In practice, though, the balance falls apart. Some skills are ridiculously overpowered, while others are completely useless. Because of that, the “build variety” never truly delivers—most players will naturally gravitate toward a few dominant setups. Worse, you unlock most classes by the middle of the game. At that point, you’ve already seen everything the system has to offer, and the sense of discovery disappears. For me, that’s where the game started to lose its appeal. On top of that, the grind to master classes is a pain. Yes, there are plenty of “fast grind” methods online—but the fact that you need them says enough. The story is decent, but it leans heavily into political themes. If you’re not into that, it becomes more of a drag than a hook. Overall, despite being one of the best in its genre, this is not a game for everyone. If you don’t enjoy grinding or dense political storytelling, you’ll likely burn out before the end.
The number of times my characters got instantly killed before I even had a chance to move, forcing me to restart the match? TOO DAMN HIGH. Parts of this game are fun but honestly it's mostly just frustrating.
Possible spoilers
I don't use half points for my scores

First game in The Ivalice Alliance that I'm playing. This was a retroactive thing
This is by far my favorite game so far. Phenomenal VA work. the story is of warring ducal houses with a touch of fantasy. It feels like there's many characters making the world feel bigger. The remaster is mostly just a coat of paint but I loved the artstyle as well
The job system was so fun to tinker with. There's a job tree and five abilities to equip at any time. Two sets of actions (one primary from the chosen job, and the secondary from any other job), one reaction, one passive and one movement ability. Finding ways to break the game the same way that I did with FFV was so fun and the vast number of combinations make it feel like each character is truly your own. Grinding for the all job mastery achievement was just boring though. It also uses a grid based tactical battle system instead of traditional turn based
The story is amazing. Felt very traditional fantasy with warring. There's ducal houses going to war, the church with it's knights templar and the peasants rising up after too many wars, very traditional fantasy, however you can definitely feel the FF touch throughout (in a good way). The final boss felt almost conceptual, like we're fighting a system rather than one person. That was also really cool. There were some sidequests with some surprise characters, all of it is in Chapter 4 though
Music is great, however it is just the original music. Although it is good, I preferred some of the soundtracks from the other games and this one does get a little repetitive
Overall amazing game, my favorite so far as I said. Probably not great as a first final fantasy and I'd definitely recommend atleast FFV before as a primer to the job system Time to Beat - 47.3 hours Time to Complete - 55 hours Story - 5/5 Music - 3/5 Artstyle - 5/5 Combat - 5/5 Overall - 5/5

They removed the beautiful War of the Lions animated cutscenes. Worse, they are actually in the game but hidden away in the menus and there is no option to inject the cutscenes through active story progression. Now I am removed from immersion in the game as when I reach a cutscene, instead of thinking about the story all I am thinking about is the nonsensical reason why they wont even give me the player the option to experience the story how I wish to. I tried to refund the game, but I was too far progressed before I realized they removed the animated cutscenes.
While it is the original gameplay recipe, the graphics look like someone smeared Vaseline all over the screen and then added a grain filter for no reason. Either that or someone brand new to Photoshop discovered the "Smoothing" tool and decided to smudge everything into oblivion. It just does not look good at all with whatever they did to it. Outside of battle it looks fine but no one plays a game to look at it outside of the battles - battles are the heart of the game. The true best version of this game is War of the Lions on PSP Emulator with the speed mod fix to crank it up to 120 FPS instead of the 30 FPS laggy mess whenever you cast spells.
