Recommendation: A simple to play game with some interesting tactical choices that was worth it when it cost money; now that it's free, it's definitely something to try. Critique: This roguelite game is played entirely with the classic keyboard control scheme of arrow keys and spacebar. You move orthoganally through a randomly-generated maze, trying to find a key, pick it up, and bring it to a lock on the level without being killed by traps and monsters first. In a way, it's like a roguelite version of Gauntlet. I say it's a roguelite, because it has some elements in common with the roguelike genre: you're exploring a dungeon by revealing the passages as you go, the dungeons are randomly generated, the enemies move only when you do, and you fight monsters by moving toward them. But it lacks a lot of the other elements of roguelikes: it has pixel graphics (rather than ASCII), it has music and sound, death is not permanent, and there's WAY fewer monsters and items than in rogue or any of the other games of its ilk. But it's a fun, light dungeon explorer that can require a lot of repetition to complete. I found the knight and the wizard really easy to play, because they have abilities that defeat enemies, while the thief was extraordinarily difficult. The disarm traps ability is VERY useful...when it works. It often fails, and that deals damage to you AND leaves you with a trap that will deal damage to you every time you pass that square (if you just trigger a trap normally without trying to disarm it, it only damages you once). So the thief actually plays better if you don't use their special power, but dungeons with a thief seem to generate a lot more traps than either the knight or the wizard. Review: In Famaze, you play one of three characters trying to retrieve the cookbook for the King: a knight, who has a smite ability; a thief, who can disarm traps; and a wizard, who can turn items into fireballs (which "trample:" excess damage continues past the monster, rolling down the corridors, wiping out more enemies and lighting the passages for a while). Mostly these differences are just ones of flavor, though, because the biggest determinant of success (finding the key, maneuvering to the lock, and advancing to the next level) is the random distribution of useful items. If you have enough items relative to monsters, you will succeed. If you don't, you will fail. The dungeons do not have rules that ensure a "safe" path to the key, so it's luck of the draw. Your little character has a starting number of hit points, displayed above their head. When they fight monsters or trigger traps, that number decrements, and when it reaches zero your character dies. When your character dies, however, they are resurrected and inserted into a redrawn version of the level. So you don't start the game over again, but all your progress on that level is gone. Fighting monsters is a matter of moving toward them, each of you losing 1 HP with each move. That's not to say that there aren't some interesting tactical choices to make, though. The map shows you monsters, treasures, items, and any passages you've already explored. The items, traps, and monsters interact with each other in interesting ways. Defeating monsters, interacting with traps and various items gives you experience points; get enough experience and you gain a level: your HP maximum increases by 1 and you are fully healed. With a bit of care, you can time when you gain that level. In addition, there are two ways to generate light: there are squares that have braziers that you light when you move onto them (which cast a large area of light), and flares that you pick up and use at your discretion (which cast a small area of light). Any monsters caught within the radius of light and transformed back into rutabagas. Each rutabaga that you collect heals your character for 1 HP. Potions that you pick up heal you back to your max HP when you use them, and there are single-use spaces in the dungeon that you move onto that fully heal you once. So for much of the game there is a dance that you do to find an area where there are the most monsters that will be affected by the light when you are at low HP, at which point you can use a flare or light a brazier to transform all the monsters into healing rutabagas (and the more rutabagas you collect, the higher your final score when you complete the game). Late in the game, this calculation gets turned on its head in an interesting way: there are spectator-like creatures that are asleep and can be safely moved past while in the darkness, but instead of turning into rutabagas when lit, they wake up hostile. It's a fun little game, but it's also something that I've been content to have played once every five years: a little bit goes a long way.

I really don't see the point in a game, that has no story nor achievements
