A lovely looking retro shmup, reminding me of classics from the 80s...that I was really awful at! I got my ass handed to me quite a few times in this game too, but it is fun to play.
ExtraGalactica, developed by Digital Yogurt and Ghost Street Games LLC and published by Ghost Street Games LLC, is an ambitious indie shooter that attempts to expand the boundaries of the traditional arcade formula by blending bullet hell mechanics with additional layers of experimentation. At its core, it is a fast-paced top-down space shooter, but it distinguishes itself through its willingness to introduce unconventional ideas, both in its gameplay systems and its overall tone. The premise is intentionally eccentric, following an unlikely pair—a football quarterback and a mascot—tasked with defending a distant world, setting the stage for a game that prioritizes energy and creativity over narrative seriousness. The primary gameplay loop is built around navigating dense waves of enemies while avoiding complex bullet patterns, a structure that will feel familiar to fans of the genre. Movement is fluid and responsive, allowing players to weave through tight spaces and maintain control even in high-pressure situations. What elevates the experience is the inclusion of mechanics designed to give players more agency during chaotic encounters. One such feature allows players to briefly slow time, providing a strategic tool to reposition, dodge incoming attacks, or line up shots more effectively. This adds a layer of decision-making that goes beyond simple reflexes, giving players moments of control within otherwise overwhelming scenarios. Another key aspect of the game is its emphasis on momentum and scoring. Players are encouraged to maintain streaks and perform efficiently in combat, building up power that can be unleashed through high-impact abilities capable of clearing large portions of the screen. This creates a satisfying risk-and-reward dynamic, where aggressive play is often more beneficial than cautious movement. Combined with elements of randomness in enemy encounters and level progression, the game offers a degree of unpredictability that keeps each session feeling fresh, even if the core mechanics remain consistent. What sets ExtraGalactica apart, however, is its attempt to incorporate multiple gameplay styles into a single experience. In addition to its shooting segments, the game explores ideas such as platforming and on-foot exploration, shifting the perspective and pace in ways that break from the traditional structure of the genre. While this ambition is commendable, it also introduces inconsistency. The different gameplay elements do not always feel fully integrated, and transitions between them can disrupt the flow established by the core shooting mechanics. As a result, the experience can feel uneven, as though it is balancing several ideas without fully committing to any one of them. Visually, the game adopts a vibrant, retro-inspired aesthetic enhanced by modern effects. Bright colors, energetic animations, and a clear visual style help maintain readability even during the most intense moments. The overall presentation complements the gameplay well, reinforcing the sense of speed and urgency that defines the experience. The audio design supports this atmosphere, with sound effects and music that contribute to the game’s fast-paced rhythm without becoming overwhelming. Despite its strengths, the game’s limitations are closely tied to its development history. As an incomplete project that did not fully reach its intended scope, many of its ideas feel underdeveloped. Systems that show potential are not expanded upon, and the broader structure lacks the cohesion needed to unify its various components. This gives the impression of a game that was aiming for something larger but ultimately remains a collection of strong concepts rather than a fully realized whole. Even so, ExtraGalactica manages to deliver moments of genuine excitement. When its mechanics align—when movement, timing, and abilities come together in a well-executed sequence—the game captures the thrill that defines the best arcade shooters. These moments highlight the strength of its core design, even if they are not consistently sustained throughout the experience. Ultimately, ExtraGalactica is a creative and energetic shooter that stands out for its ambition and willingness to experiment. It offers a compelling core gameplay loop enhanced by unique mechanics, but it is held back by a lack of cohesion and incomplete development. For players who enjoy arcade-style action and are open to experimental design, it provides an engaging, if uneven, experience that hints at greater potential. Rating: 7/10
Fun retro throwback!
This is an indie game that definitely has promise. The tutorial could use some work (I had some trouble figuring things out via keyboard controls) but it was worth making my way through it. The base gameplay is fast paced and addictively fun. At times it's chaotic and you can't really tell what's going on because *so much* is happening at the same time, it's really a blast. I look forward to the campaign coming out.
For all of my fellow gamers who love the thrill of high difficulty gameplay and want some galaga vibes then this is the game for you! Have absolutely enjoyed my experience and the game having a leaderboard so you can see how you are doing against other players is just the icing on the cake!
