on my index controllers, the smooth movement doesn't let me move in whatever direction i want - moving the left thumbstick forward and back sends me at a weird diagonal, and the right thumbstick's up and down strafes me left and right. i can't play what seems like a really cool thing!

It's cool, but I didn't find many of the spaces all that inventive or fantastical. Digital architecture is a cool way for artists to create art in that space, but EBA doesn't do enough with it imo.
