This game is incredible. Its a strategy game and documentary rolled into one. You play mostly as ants, but you occasionally get to play as Termites, Spiders, and Beetles. There are a wide variety of creative extra levels and even a custom game mode with near infinite replayability in addition to the 11 documentary story missions and 5 experiments that make up the story mode. Each level is perfectly designed, except for perhaps the first level (New Home). It feels a bit bland in comparison to every other level, but that's ok since its basically a tutorial. The game also has lots of customizable difficulty options. The custom game mode has near perfect costumizable difficulty, and then each level has 5 difficulty settings: Easy, Medium, Hard, Extreme, and Impossible. Impossible is a nightmare. Even though I've got over 300 hours on this game, I've still not beaten every story mode level on Impossible (I've beaten every experiement, New Home, Subjugation, Rising Tide, Triage, and Last Mound Standing on Impossible). There is also a challenge mode available for each documentary level, which adds a critter that will make your rise to power more difficult. While the base game is incredible and one of the best games I have ever played, the DLC was not very good. Its a pretty good case of "you get what you pay for." Its 5 dollars, so I don't feel bad about buying it, but all that's in the DLC is you can play as Exploding ants and Exploding Termites, which are funny to use but not particularly good. You get two extra levels, but they're both just story mode levels with your exploding colony added. There is also no new narration, which was one of the coolest parts of the base game. The DLC is ok, and having new colonies for freeplay is always fun, but I would ultimately say that unless you're really really into the game, the DLC isn't a must buy.
