Dune: Awakening is an absolute cinematic experience for anyone who truly loves the universe of Dune. I've read the books, played the classic Dune strategy games from the 90s, watched David Lynch's 1984 film, the older miniseries, and of course the modern movies. I've spent years with this universe in its different forms — and Dune: Awakening manages to capture something that immediately makes me feel at home on Arrakis. The atmosphere is phenomenal. The sound design, music, endless desert, ornithopters, sandworms, survival mechanics and the constant importance of spice make the world feel unmistakably like Dune. Sometimes all it takes is a few seconds of that familiar soundscape and I immediately want to play again. Spice harvesting is easily one of my favorite parts of the entire game. Going into the desert with your equipment, deploying the harvester, extracting spice while keeping an eye on your surroundings, protecting what you've collected and knowing that a sandworm could turn everything into a disaster creates exactly the kind of tension I wanted from a Dune game. The building and progression systems are also incredibly satisfying. Gathering materials, improving your equipment, constructing your own base and gradually establishing yourself on Arrakis gives the game a wonderful sense of progression. And then there is the Deep Desert. I absolutely love the concept of its weekly cycle. The Coriolis Storm reshapes the majority of the area every week, forcing players to explore, rebuild and compete for valuable resources again instead of allowing the endgame world to become permanently static. It's not perfect. I would love to see an even larger and more diverse world, more dynamic events, and additional innovative activities to keep long-term players occupied. There is enormous potential here to make Arrakis feel even more alive and unpredictable. But despite those criticisms, I love this game. I'm not going to pretend that absolutely every mechanic leaves me speechless, but as someone who has loved Dune through its books, games and films, this is a world I can happily return to again and again. Sometimes I only need to hear a few seconds of Dune's music — or even glance at one of the books sitting on my shelf — and suddenly I want to be back on Arrakis. The spice must flow. 9.5/10 — a beautiful, ambitious and deeply immersive love letter to the universe of Dune.
I have over 200 hours of gameplay, built the best base I've ever seen and have nothing to show for it. You lose EVERYTHING when you're gone for a while. The game just doesn't respect your time. I suggest waiting for singleplayer to come out.
absolutely do not recommend. the game had a lot of promise to start....and then you get the ornithopter and the game changes entirely. the story is lackluster and forgettable with introducing items you will literally never use like a stilltent or bone knife. the season pass? 95% cosmetics under the guise of "DLC"...the pvp was so awfully balanced they had to add pve AND THEN single player mode. you build a character the whole game, unlock skills and then...pvp with ornithopters instead. the landsraad devolved into one mega guild controlling both sides and yeah. this game is a mess in the sense of not knowing what it wants to be, what it is and the lighting is horrible. you can have like 60 lighting structures in your base...which you can expand several times. so if you like mood/aesthetics, go elsewhere. no ambient lighting for you outside of like one or two rooms. maybe i'll return one day. i had fun with my friends until i realized how horrible the "endgame" actually is and all the filler/useless stuff they have pre-ornithopter.
So, Dune Awakening is probably one of my best Survival RPGs out there today. The building is intuitive and forgiving. The graphics and design of the models make it visually pleasing. The game's first 100 hours will have you hooked as the game takes you along a journey to end game. The story will keep you interested, and the survival aspects will have you engaged and immersed in the world. The negative this game received in 2025 was the developers failed to address immediate end game issues and balancing of their end game content, or lack thereof. However, with September 22nd 2026's update, many improved quality of life changes will begin. The end of the Book One series of story telling wraps up in Chapter 4. At the time of this post, I have logged 1700+ hours in the game so suffice to say I got my money's worth. Anyone that hesitates on this game is truly doing themselves an injustice. I hope that this game can last 10 years and see many more improvements and experiences.
I bought this game like survival ONLINE... They made everything to turn it into survival SINGLE-player game
So I've finally decided to give it a go after they added single player mode (I tested it via Public Test Client in your Steam library, so don't get fooled by my short playtime, as Public Test Client is a separate thing) World seems interesting, cutscenes are okay, some are bland others stunning. I like the gunplay so far. Sounds are okay too. Music is nothing special but also nothing terrible. It's a bit buggy, even control settings have bugs that if you change one key it shows all in red even if you didn't really change them from their default settings.. Had to press ''restore default'' but after one small change they will show conflicts again, so I guess vanilla settings has conflicts in them as default or something. No idea about controller, I don't play RPG/shooters with a controller. Character creator is still so barebones... Sliders are very odd, they just enlarge body parts without actually making it appear more muscular, looks very odd and unnatural If you set sliders higher than 5-6 it makes bodies look so odd, especially male chars. Like for example you want your character to be more muscular and move sliders to 7 or 8+, but it just enlarges the whole thing, it's not making biceps, pecs etc more muscled, just bigger but with the same average shape, looks really weird and just unrealistic. Male ''underwear''... I don't think I ever saw any men wear pants or long shorts as their underwear lol, coming from Conan this really was unpleasant (Pikachu face) surprise. Only few tattoo options after all this time is also disappointing. Eyes look a bit creepy for some reason. Overall for an RPG/MMO game, character creator is a huge letdown to me. Performance is not that terrible. I expected worse after all this chatter, but it does stutter a bit (it's UE5 so..) Weirdly changing settings doesn't change visual that much, even ultra looks mostly just fine. I don't like how my character moves when in melee combat, he looks like he's ''floating'' and constantly changes his position, I don't like when game does that. Graphics looks ok, maybe a bit dated in some places, I wish we had sharpness setting, especially useful for upscalling, had to disable upscalling for lack of sharpness control.. I also disabled FrameGen as I hate ghosting/smearing in motion that it causes. 2560x1440 all ultra settings locked 90 fps seems stable on 4090, so far at least, I heard some cities tanks fps and need lots of CPU power, hope 7800X3D will be enough for it not to drop below 60-80 fps. To be honest after (not so perfect but overall better) Conan Exiles and all those years you had time to learn the engine, I expected overall much better game. For now I can't recommend this game, if they improve it in the future (I'm being naive?) I will update this review.
the first couple of hours are fun but then it just gets tedious. A whole lot of empty with some really obnoxious mechanics. This feels like a mid 2000's b grade game. The world is barely populated, all objects look the same, you could be in 5 differnet locations and think you were in the same place. Getting oneshot by a worm is wild, you just lose all the stuff you'd put together and you start with nothing. Egad not only tedious but gratuitiously punitive. Graphics are smooth but only becuase the rendering is ~2006 Source engine quality. Gameplay is 1 dimension, there's no input user metrics for how the game is played on the micro level, since there's only one gun to start with only one way to fire it and only 1 type of bullet etc, the game probably plays identical across all players at the start. It's just a really low quality effort at a game that reveals itself after you've done the same things enough times that you realise there's no variation to it, and that's by design.
I had a good run with Dune: Awakening, through both the good and the bad. There isn't much to say that hasn't already been said—it has its limitations, but it was fun for what it was. I took a break a few months ago and decided to come back when new content dropped and other were annouced. Unfortunately, I went on holiday and logged back in to find my base powered down. Losing a few vehicles wasn't the main issue, but I had all my resources stored in the large cargo container for the transport ornithopter. It was destroyed, taking 100+ hours worth of grind and farmed materials with it. I know managing power was ultimately on me, but losing that much progress is an immediate exit point for me. I don't see myself recovering from that setback or returning anytime soon. It was a good game for what it was, but that's where my journey ends. the lost does leave a after taste i must say
7. PVP.
I was playing Dune: Awakening as part of a 50-player guild, and we were actively building an academy with the goal of bringing in 50+ more players. But after the recent changes, we stopped playing and left the game. We didn’t build a large guild just to peacefully farm PvE content. We played for territory, conflict, alliances, rivalries, politics, and - most importantly - the risk of losing everything. That risk gave meaning to progression and made having a large guild actually matter. Now PvP is increasingly becoming an optional activity, while more and more of the game is designed around safe and relaxing PvE. For us, this removed the reason to keep building the guild. We were preparing to grow, and instead we left. Developers, please look at EVE Online. After more than 20 years, it remains one of the best references for sandbox MMO design because loss matters. Ships, territory, resources, corporations and entire empires can be lost. That risk creates stories, conflict, cooperation and reasons for players to stay. Dune has the perfect setting for this. We don’t want a safe PvE sandbox. We want Arrakis to be dangerous. We want something worth fighting for - and something we can actually lose.
