Dream Bright is a terribly wholesome F2P game and an experience that can be completed in about 20 minutes. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2982816963 A young girl is exploring her new home trying to find her toys. Unable to reach them in the real world, she enters a dream realm to meet them with the aid of her adorable companion - who for some reason encourages her to run down stairs during the tutorial. In total there are only two toys needing rescuing and it’s a very easy game. In her imagination she gains extra skills transforming gameplay from a slow basic puzzler into a pretty fun platformer with decently solid controls. Alongside the new double jumping, her companion has an extra ability which acts as a small slingshot to help scale tall objects. ‘Accidentally’ missing a landing has this really nice seamless fall straight back onto a recent platform. When she returns to the real world daylight is gone and the night takes over. The house is now full of ‘monsters’ and ‘dark clouds’. These have to be avoided either by stealth, running past, or using the second companion ability which when timed right stuns them. Honestly the ‘monsters’ activated some primal fear in me cause it freaked me out a little the first time I saw them but they’re not terribly scary. This segment reminded me somewhat of the game ‘Among The Sleep’. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2982816796 Dream Bright has several visual bugs with widescreen resolutions but I never noticed any playing in windowed mode. I really like this game, there are lots of intriguing ideas and it’s very cute. I would happily pay for a polished and fully fleshed out release.
BEFORE STARTING...
This is a student project and for a student project it's quite an interesting game, but I can't say I'm impressed with the job they did, sadly...
ARE STORY AND STORY-TELLING GOOD?
The story is quite short and it's about searching about finding Lucy's toys with her imaginary friend, it involves some scenes inside of the dream world as well, but the story is too basic and too short, I mean finishing the game takes 10-15 minutes.
GAMEPLAY MECHANICS ARE WELL-MADE?
Gameplay is well-made and enjoyable considering how short the game is, there are some different mechanics especially we can use in the dream world and they are interesting.
HOW ABOUT LEVEL/WORLD DESIGN? IS IT GOOD?
Yeah, the level/world design looks cute and good, especially the dream world is quite interesting.
HOW ABOUT VISUAL QUALITY AND STYLE?
The visual quality looks decent and the visual style is cute.
HOW ABOUT OPTIMIZATION
For any game, optimization is one of the most important things that need to do right, but this game's optimization is terrible. I'm not sure why and how but this game gives you lower FPS even than some new AAA title games like Hogwarts Legacy, I mean I got 25-30fps with this game and there is no option to change graphic settings and it's literally unplayable at this state.
OUTCOME EVALUATION
It's quite a short and cute-looking game and an interesting student project, but with current terrible optimization, I'm not sure I should be excited about these student's developer careers... With the current nearly unplayable state I don't suggest playing it.
RATINGS
[*]Story And Story Telling = 5 [*]Gameplay Mechanics = 7 [*]Level/World Design = 7 [*]Visual Style & Quality = 7 [*]Optimization & Polishing = 1 [*]General Rating = 5.4
Let's save Lucy from her nightmares! A short journey but very adorable. Loved the way the monsters were and the chase. Would love for the journey to continue.
Dream Bright is a short, free, cute puzzle-platformer game made as a student project. You play as a girl named Lucy, who with the help of her imaginary friend (a cat... star... thing?) travels to a dream world to retrieve her other toys that were misplaced while moving houses. Its a pretty well-made little game, and one I'm willing to buy for if a full, polished version were to get made. It's only around half an hour long, and must be finished in one sitting. This game has 3 kinds of levels, the slower-paced, puzzle-based daytime real world, a faster-paced platforming in the dream world, and nighttime real world levels where you must avoid enemies. Movement in the real world feels kinda sluggish, but in the dream world it feels very smooth and satisfying. From a realistic point of view it makes sense though, a real person can imagine themselves being as fast as they'd like to. My only complaint is menu-related, as for some strange reason the game doesn't allow you to pause mid-play, making you unable to exit the game or review controls. Keyboard bindings are also absent from the controls menu, despite the fact that they still work. But due to its length it's honestly not that big of a deal. If you like cute games or just looking for a short one, you should give Dream Bright a try. It kinda has A Hat in Time vibes, to be honest.
Recommended. Despite being very short, this is a neat little experience. The visuals are crisp and the story is relatable. There is definitely some clunky-ness in the controls, especially with climbing ledges, but the dream world platforming feels great. If you enjoy short 3D adventures, this is worth a play.
This game is good and could have been a fully fledged game with more levels. The story is compelling, the artwork is brilliant. It's a grand concept for a game. The only thing letting it down was how short it was and also the controls felt a little clunky. The game for some reason gave me sly cooper vibes?
