(1. Mass Effect: Andromeda 2. Anthem 3. Dragon Age: The Veilguard),
I came into this game knowing how much everyone seemed to hate it, so my expectations were pretty low. It's definitely not as expansive and choice-driven as the previous games. The choices you do get seem to get pretty streamlined, and one or two of them have pretty atrocious consequences that you really cannot avoid one way or another. The game seems to hold your hand for the entire run, where you pretty much know at all times what missions are available and where, which is great, really, but it also shows how small the world actually is, because you roam the areas pretty quickly in order to complete said missions, even without fast travel. People complained about how dialogue choices barely deviate from one to the other, and to be fair, yeah you can tell that sometimes the options almost remind you of Persona 5 options, where you read both options aloud and you could perfectly fit the two together in one sentence. With all of that being said, I also have to appreciate the gameplay, which, despite the growth tree being overly simplistic in its nature, was actually quite fast-paced and easy to fall into. Even if I took a few months on a break from the game, everything came back to me at the speed of light. The battles are visual as heck, and even though sometimes the enemies would just... not give you a single bit of room to actually perform any attacks, you get just enough time to work around it so you can actually beat them. Even though the dialogues suffer, it was quite fun seeing the story develop, especially because since you went back to the same areas all the time you also got to interact with secondary characters who aren't part of your team a lot more. I found that refreshing considering in previous DA games you usually visit an area, complete it and move on to the next. Usually. It showed a bit more familiarity with these other people, to the point where I kind of grew just as attached to them as I would to my team of ragtag misfits/crazy powerful experts. The lore also expands greatly from where we were at back with the DA:I DLCs, building up a few important new pieces of history that hadn't been explored, and I find it quite interesting to hear and read about. As for the main plot, some bits I hated, but some other bits I loved, because somehow they reminded me a bit of the previous entries. Of how great and immersive this world is. Anyway, TL;DR, game has lots of faults, but if you come in knowing that, you can still have lots of fun.
I really enjoyed this game. The combat was solid, story engaging and graphics excellent. I think this one is a big win for Bioware despite the low sales. really hope they continue this trend because this game is fantastic.
It's not what I want from DA, ofc, but it's not a big game. Mediocre DA game, but ok'ish - solid game overall.
TLDR: Don't listen to the people who criticize this game bc of woke stuff or the over the top cringe trailers. Underneath this is a game which entertained me a lot - and I have been playing all previous games as well. Plus: + great graphics + detailed character appearance editor + story ties in directly into DA: Inquisition and its DLC Trespasser Negative: - more comic-style aesthetics lead to rather boring outfit options - not many options to decorate your base (limited mostly to your chamber) - some jokes are annyoing and pull you out of the serious mood Surprise: I expected to be put off by the combat system as I really couldn't stand the radial design of the combat interface when I saw this in the trailers. But I soon forgot how it looked bc it works well. You feel connected to your teammates bc they offer options for combos. I would recommend this game to everyone who enjoyed DA: Inquisition. As it is an action oriented game (and fast paced in boss fights), old school DA 1 enjoyers will not be the target audience.
