DOOM manages something few games do - to be effortlessly fun. Shoot demons. Watch them explode into meaty chunks. Explore the map to get things that make it easier to kill more demons, faster. Run and jump and shoot and bang your head to the fantastic music. Everything in the game exists to make it more fun for the player - it is uncompromised. DOOM does not get in its own way. It's not full of gimmicks. It's not a 'platform' or a 'service'. You pick it up, you play it, and you put it down when you're done. It doesn't try to explain every little detail of why you're there and what you're doing - you're there to kill demons. It doesn't try to build out some expansive lore. Humans got greedy, got corrupted, and now demons are everywhere - a simple but solid hook. DOOM is a game that will hold up even decades from now. I played it back nearly a decade ago and tried it again just recently to confirm as much - no nostalgia needed. The graphics may age, but the gameplay and story, and characterization will not.
