About
In the 1980s, Defender of the Crown helped define a new kind of cinematic strategy game. Now it returns, rebuilt for modern platforms and remastered with an entirely new way to play.
Conquer territories, raise armies, storm castles, and shift the balance of power. It's the Defender of the Crown you remember - just sharper, cleaner, and built for today.

Retro Mode. The original Amiga classic, preserved with near-perfect authenticity and quality-of-life enhancements.
Classic Mode. Amiga classic reimagined for today. A completely new visual identity, refined mechanics, and smoother systems.
Kingdom Mode. An entirely new challenge. Procedurally generated maps, special dice mechanics, unlockable abilities, and multiple difficulty levels to keep every run unpredictable.

Everything that made the original special is intact: the ruleset, the pacing, the atmosphere. What's changed is everything around it - cleaner systems, improved balance, a modernized interface, and quality-of-life updates throughout.

MIXED but [barely] recommended. I don't care about retro or classic mode at all. It's a random rng fest of take and retake. There's a technique [that I won't spoil] that gives you a better chance, but it's just anti-play. Kingdom mode is a great idea, but as it gets increasingly harder it's just plainly rigged against the player. IF you play the right cards, IF you select the right troops, IF you get lucky and IF the AI doesn't, maybe you'll win. And that's already just to get beyond the first tile! So you really don't even have the right cards for it yet. There is some puzzle aspect to it that is fun, but mostly it's about RNG. And loading the game again isn't save-scumming, it's part of the unintended metagaming. If you turn tutorial on the game just bombards you with info, but the core elements are lacking. I THINK I know what the game expects me to do at retro/classic jousts, but actually doing it totally eludes me. I have no clue what I was doing wrong. I paid 16,99 at a discount. I think that's fair. I didn't get that many hours of it, but I had fun. The game just could be a whole lot better.

Cool! It Came from the Desert.
There is no transfer of units outside of the home base. In the C64 and the NES versions: You buy units in your home base, transfer to your army, and then move your army around. you can do that in both classic and retro modes here. however the differences is that in the old versions, you could transfer units to or from the army into castles that you build or take. It added a massive degree of flexibility, taking a key piece of land, and putting a castle there, and letting the enemy loose a lot of troups trying to take it back. But, that transfer of units outside of the home base is not a part of this game. don't get me wrong. I am such a fan of Defender of the Crown, and am happy that there is a game to play that is similar to the old version, I am glad to have bought it. But the retro game is not a "direct, authentic preservation of the original code and assets"
It's a quirky little game from the past. Runs great on the SteamDeck. Basically an assortment of mini games and light strategy in order to conquer lands and win. I like it for short bursts of play. The remaster is very good while staying true to the original. If you ever played the original and liked it, this is a no brainer. If you are just curious to see what the fuss was about back then, the price is just right!
игра просто скуная в 3 хода , просто кусок гона
i love it great remake. I dont understand the low score on steam should be a 90 at least.
This game is just not good. Made in the 80's, and its extremely obvious. Should've just stayed in the 80's.
Fun
Null Stimmung wie auf dem Amiga... sorry sitzen 6
A fun game, even if you haven't played the original (I haven't). Charming visuals and gameplay that is engaging and varied enough. I can't overstate how beautiful it looks to play. So far I'm very happy I purchased it, and at the pricepoint it's perfect. I haven't played the roguelike mode but I've heard mixed things - some people like it, but some others don't. I imagine I will like it even if it's a bit simple, because the game is cheap and full of soul.
