I picked up the original DS on the playstation when it came out, then was upset when the PC version came out and it was just the superior version of the game. This time around I waited for DS2 to come to PC and again I am pleased to say this is the best version of the game.
Id say if you liked Death Stranding 1 you're going to like this one, its the same premise just greatly expanded upon. Pretty much every single system has added levels of depth to it and several new ones added on top of it.
There is far more general combat in this one and Im personally okay with it because of how greatly expanded your options are for it. You can trick out a truck with some automated turrets and charge into the enemy lines guns blazing, or you can metal gear it and sneak in using various tools and take things out one at a time.
The story is just as ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy as the first game except near the end of this one the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insanity gets turned up to 11 and I can see why that might be a turn off to some people but really its right up Kojima's alley, he keeps things grounded and then all of a sudden you're watching Kaiju's battle it out while you have a banjo duel with satan over the fate of ghost babies everywhere. Okay not really but when you get there youll understand the reference.
Interesting setup teased for a Death Stranding 3 that im not upset over, it wasn't really a cliff hangar, much like DS1 didn't end with a cliff hangar, its just a narrative opening that could potentially be explored and honestly I hope Kojima does, I wasn't sure he could hit the same high notes as he did with DS1 being how out there of a game it was to begin with but DS2 reaches that same pinnacle and soars over it.
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, I'd call it a Kojima work of art much like the metal gear series before it.. I think this one has the means of going just as far and being just as influential.
Its definitely worth your time but if you haven't played DS1, I wouldn't say its NECESSARY to do so before this one but it would definitely help you appreciate what is going on more and the emotional weights involved for the various story beats. They do a good job of catching you up with some summaries but the first game is so good I'd say pick up this one and DS1 and play em in order and you got yourself about 100 hours worth of entertainment that you won't regret. I know I don't.
