Death Skid Marks is a rogue-like car combat game about what so many of us have experienced: a road trip to a music gig… only in this game, things get violent. The game uniquely blends top down arcade action and RPG mechanics.

Całkiem fajna gierka dla niewymagającej rozrywki.
Deceptively captivating little game with very ideosyncratic mechanics, and a unique aesthetic style. My favourite aspect of the game is how real the progression into the run feels, the guns becoming stronger, the enemies becoming more strange and packed with armor and appendages, the sun setting bathing everything in an orange hue, all with the fact that the game's really hard and unfair at times, it really makes for an expirience. Playing occasionally since 2014 thanks to LetsPlayPoRusski's videos (he has a road decal in the game even!), it really surprised me to see the game becoming free seemingly through the sheer good will of the developers, that's insanely amazing, yo!
This is the best free game I've played this year. Last year. Maybe any year. The retro style and shall we say—imaginative—atmosphere are very well realized and the arcade play masks some deep-ish mechanics in this mad max meets alice in wonderland rougelike-ish game.

Death Skid Marks is a rogue-like vehicular combat RPG developed by Studio Whisky Tango Inc. and published by Studio Whisky Tango Inc. and JSR-Productions that delivers one of the most unconventional road-trip adventures available on Steam. Combining high-speed vehicle battles, procedural progression, dark humor, role-playing mechanics, and a heavy dose of punk-rock attitude, the game creates a chaotic experience that feels completely comfortable embracing its own madness. What initially appears to be a simple top-down driving game quickly reveals itself as a surprisingly deep roguelike packed with strategic decision-making, bizarre encounters, and enough randomness to keep players returning for run after run. The premise is delightfully absurd. Players set out on a dangerous journey across Route 666 in pursuit of a legendary concert, only to find themselves trapped in a world filled with violent gangs, cultists, law enforcement, mutants, bizarre creatures, and countless other threats. The road ahead is long, dangerous, and often ridiculous, but reaching the final destination becomes an obsession that drives every decision. The game immediately establishes its personality through this premise, making it clear that realism has no place here. Instead, Death Skid Marks thrives on exaggerated situations and unpredictable chaos. At its core, the game revolves around surviving a long series of encounters while gradually improving both vehicle and crew. Every journey begins with limited resources, modest equipment, and a relatively weak vehicle. Progression comes through scavenging supplies, recruiting passengers, collecting upgrades, and surviving increasingly difficult battles. Since the game follows a roguelike structure, death carries significant consequences, forcing players to adapt and learn from previous mistakes. This creates a satisfying risk-reward system where every choice feels important. Combat serves as the heart of the experience. Battles take place in real time and require players to manage movement, attacks, resources, and positioning simultaneously. While the controls are accessible, encounters become increasingly demanding as the journey progresses. Enemy vehicles arrive in large numbers, forcing players to make split-second decisions while managing limited supplies. The result is combat that feels fast-paced and energetic while still rewarding careful planning. One of the game's greatest strengths is the sheer variety of tools available to players. Vehicles can be upgraded in numerous ways, while weapons range from relatively practical firearms to absurd devices that fit perfectly within the game's over-the-top world. Different combinations of equipment encourage experimentation and allow players to develop unique strategies. Some builds focus on overwhelming firepower, while others prioritize survivability, speed, or resource efficiency. This flexibility significantly increases replay value and ensures that no two runs feel identical. The hitchhiker system adds another layer of depth. Along the road, players encounter unusual travelers who can join the journey. These passengers often provide unique bonuses, abilities, or gameplay modifications that influence the direction of a run. Some improve combat performance, while others affect resource generation or introduce entirely new strategic possibilities. Deciding who to recruit becomes a meaningful choice because every passenger has the potential to alter the balance of the journey. Random events play a major role in maintaining unpredictability. Players frequently encounter strange situations that require difficult decisions. These moments may lead to valuable rewards, devastating losses, unexpected allies, or entirely new opportunities. Because the outcomes are rarely guaranteed, every event introduces an element of risk. This unpredictability helps ensure that even experienced players remain engaged throughout multiple playthroughs. The boss encounters are particularly memorable. Throughout the journey, players face larger-than-life adversaries that perfectly embody the game's bizarre sense of humor. These battles are often challenging and require more than simple firepower to overcome. Learning boss patterns, managing resources efficiently, and adapting strategies become essential for success. Since different bosses can appear during different runs, each journey maintains a sense of surprise and discovery. Humor is deeply woven into every aspect of the experience. Death Skid Marks embraces crude jokes, dark comedy, absurd situations, and exaggerated personalities without hesitation. The game rarely takes itself seriously, and that commitment to chaos becomes one of its greatest strengths. The writing constantly introduces unexpected scenarios that make the world feel unpredictable and entertaining. Even failures often become memorable because of the ridiculous circumstances surrounding them. The visual presentation reflects the game's rebellious identity. Rather than striving for realism, the art style embraces a rough, gritty aesthetic that complements the punk-inspired atmosphere. Characters, vehicles, and environments possess a distinctive low-budget charm that reinforces the game's personality. While the graphics may not appeal to players seeking visual sophistication, they successfully support the game's chaotic tone and help establish a unique identity. The soundtrack deserves significant recognition. Filled with energetic rock and punk influences, the music provides the perfect backdrop for high-speed battles and desperate survival situations. Every encounter feels more intense thanks to the aggressive soundtrack, which consistently reinforces the game's rebellious spirit. The audio design contributes heavily to the overall atmosphere and remains one of the most memorable aspects of the experience. Progression is handled exceptionally well. Despite the game's difficulty, players are constantly rewarded with new discoveries, upgrades, vehicles, items, and strategies. Each failed run contributes to future success by expanding player knowledge and revealing additional content. This creates a compelling loop where even defeat feels productive because it provides valuable experience for the next attempt. What makes Death Skid Marks particularly impressive is its ability to balance randomness with strategy. While luck certainly plays a role in determining available items and encounters, successful players are consistently rewarded for good decision-making. Resource management, route planning, crew selection, and combat efficiency all have a significant impact on long-term survival. This balance prevents the game from feeling unfair while preserving the excitement that comes from unpredictable outcomes. The game also benefits from an enormous amount of replayability. Multiple endings, numerous vehicles, countless item combinations, diverse bosses, and randomized events ensure that each playthrough unfolds differently. Even after dozens of runs, players are likely to encounter situations they have never seen before. This constant variety helps maintain long-term engagement and reinforces the addictive nature of the roguelike structure. For players who enjoy roguelikes, challenging progression systems, unpredictable encounters, and games that refuse to take themselves seriously, Death Skid Marks offers an entertaining and highly replayable journey. Beneath its outrageous humor and chaotic presentation lies a genuinely rewarding experience that continues to stand out as one of the most distinctive indie roguelikes available. Rating: 9/10
