I hate doing bad review, but i must say it. The intro of the game is the best part. I dont understand why the neon pink, it doesnt fit with the ambiance. Why we have 8 item spaces but there is only 3 items. Why so many ammo when the only thing to fire is target. It feels more like a space jumping puzzle than an horror game. I dont understand at all, there is no end, its like its not finished. It says Chapter 5 completed and there is nothing after. No more chapter. I'm really disapointed. :( Maybe if it was free or under 5$ i'd say yes, but at this price with all i saw its no im sorry :(
off the bat I was glad it features voice over work. Not too bad initially. Was runinin' simulator at first till we got a weapon. Then I managed to get stuck but hit the "try again" option as a result. This started the whole game over..oop. Still I'm intrigued to see what happens goin' forward. Darkness Ritual: Impasse is a psychological horror experience that thrives on confusion, dread, and surreal atmosphere rather than relying on nonstop scares or traditional survival horror mechanics. Developed and published by AProX, the game places players inside a nightmare-like world born from occult rituals and distorted reality, creating an experience that constantly feels unstable and unpredictable. From the beginning, the game avoids giving players a clear understanding of what is happening, instead throwing them into strange environments filled with cryptic symbolism, supernatural imagery, and unsettling visual distortions. This deliberate uncertainty becomes one of the game’s defining strengths because the horror comes less from immediate danger and more from the growing feeling that reality itself has become corrupted. The gameplay focuses on exploration, environmental puzzle-solving, and platforming through dark and surreal locations connected by fragmented logic. Players move through underground ruins, abandoned chambers, distorted hallways, and strange dreamlike spaces while slowly uncovering clues about the ritual that trapped them inside this nightmare. The game rarely provides straightforward guidance, forcing players to carefully observe their surroundings and interpret environmental details in order to progress. This design choice creates a strong sense of immersion because every discovery feels earned rather than handed directly to the player. One of the most impressive aspects of Darkness Ritual: Impasse is its atmosphere. The environments constantly feel oppressive and psychologically exhausting in a way that many indie horror games fail to achieve. Every location seems intentionally designed to make players uncomfortable, whether through unnatural architecture, ritualistic imagery, flickering lights, or impossible spaces that appear to shift without explanation. The world often resembles a collapsing hallucination more than a physical place, and that instability creates a lingering sense of paranoia throughout the experience. Even moments without direct danger feel tense because the player is never fully certain whether the environment can be trusted. The sound design plays a huge role in maintaining this tension. Ambient drones, echoing footsteps, distant screams, whispers, and strange metallic noises constantly surround the player, creating the impression that unseen forces are always nearby. Silence is used particularly well because the absence of sound often becomes just as unsettling as the louder horror moments. The game rarely relies on cheap audio jumpscares, instead using sound to gradually increase anxiety and discomfort over time. Playing with headphones significantly enhances the experience because the audio design constantly manipulates the player’s sense of space and direction. Visually, the game embraces a rough but highly effective indie horror aesthetic. The graphics are not technically advanced, but the artistic direction gives the game a strong identity filled with disturbing imagery and surreal environmental design. Dark corridors, ritual symbols, decaying structures, and strange visual distortions create a world that feels permanently trapped between reality and nightmare. Some sections become genuinely unsettling because of how abstract and visually unpredictable they are. The game often uses psychedelic effects and warped environments to make players feel mentally disoriented, reinforcing the psychological horror themes at the center of the experience. The puzzles are another major component of the gameplay. Darkness Ritual: Impasse encourages players to experiment with the environment rather than simply follow obvious instructions. Hidden pathways, symbolic clues, and strange mechanisms require observation and patience to understand. Some puzzles are relatively simple while others become intentionally obscure, matching the game’s surreal tone. Solving these challenges often feels rewarding because the game trusts players to interpret the world on their own instead of constantly explaining every mechanic or objective directly. Narratively, the game remains intentionally cryptic for most of its runtime. The story unfolds through environmental storytelling, fragmented clues, and visual symbolism rather than traditional exposition. Themes involving occult rituals, mental deterioration, imprisonment, and supernatural corruption slowly emerge as players progress deeper into the nightmare. Much of the horror comes from ambiguity because the game never fully confirms whether the events are supernatural or psychological in nature. This uncertainty keeps the experience intriguing even when the player does not completely understand everything happening around them. However, the game is not without flaws. The movement and platforming mechanics occasionally feel stiff, especially during sections that require more precise navigation. Certain jumps and interactions can feel awkward due to inconsistent responsiveness, which sometimes disrupts immersion during tense sequences. Some puzzles also become overly cryptic to the point of frustration, leaving players wandering aimlessly without clear direction. While confusion is obviously part of the game’s design philosophy, there are moments where that confusion feels more irritating than atmospheric. Technical roughness is noticeable throughout the experience as well. Animations can appear rigid, environmental interactions occasionally lack polish, and there are minor bugs that slightly affect immersion. These issues are understandable considering the game’s indie scope, but they do prevent the experience from feeling fully refined. The surreal visual effects may also become exhausting for some players during longer sessions, particularly those sensitive to distorted imagery or disorienting environments. Despite these shortcomings, Darkness Ritual: Impasse succeeds because of how confidently it commits to its disturbing atmosphere and surreal horror identity. The game understands that fear can come from uncertainty and psychological discomfort just as effectively as from direct threats. Rather than constantly attacking the player with monsters or action sequences, it creates a lingering sense of dread through oppressive environments, cryptic storytelling, and unstable reality. That slower and more psychological approach helps the game stand out among many other indie horror releases. Darkness Ritual: Impasse is not a polished mainstream horror game designed for broad accessibility. It is strange, unsettling, occasionally frustrating, and deeply surreal, but those qualities are also what make it memorable. Players looking for straightforward storytelling or action-heavy horror may struggle with its abstract nature, but fans of atmospheric psychological horror and exploration-driven nightmare experiences will likely appreciate the game’s commitment to creating a world that constantly feels wrong in fascinating ways. bizarre mais sympa !
Very cool game with a trippy vibe. The game makes you want to finish it, as its not too hard but just enough to challenge you a bit and have fun doing it. Has a bit of jump scares, a lot of puzzle solving mixed with maze like game play. Highly suggest to anyone who enjoys these kind of game all within an indie style game.
Very interesting experience so far! For those who love simple, yet thrilling games, and walking sim, this is for you. I will post an honest review after I finish it.
