I gave it a fair chance and it's just not fun. I knew going in it was going to be different from the first one, but I thought it would be a good time. It isn't. The game is too reliant on meta progression to get anywhere, which is unlocked too slowly... you want to have more skills on your heroes so you can actually try different strategies? Well you gotta unlock them. One. At. A. Time. For. Each. Hero. And the locations to unlock skills are not even guaranteed to spawn! Plus, you don't get anything else for that run, just the skill unlock, so you might have missed a location that actually improved your chances on that run. The "paths" (classes, basically) that you unlock with candles, the meta currency, modify skills you might not even have unlocked yet. The runs are too long and, worse, not interesting enough. I have already seen the same encounters repeat many times, it feels like there is half a dozen per biome plus a few that show up in multiple biomes. Three bandits and their dog. Three melee bandits and a gun bandit. Two dudes behind a barricade. Four giant worms. Two worms and two spiders. Some giant fire guy and the two guys that buff him, and themselves, every turn. Speaking of... The game is too hard. It is possible that when you eventually unlock everything, after many, many hours, it feels better. I'm sure as hell not finding out. Every enemy feels like it does a bit of everything. Damage + dot. Damage + self buff(s). Buffs for multiple enemies. Crits. Stress for everyone. Crits. I heard this game had less RNG than DD1 and it sure doesn't feel like it. Crits, everywhere, even when they don't have the crit token. What's the point of the token system if that ♥♥♥♥ can happen anytime anyway? Oh, well, with the token you are *even more* screwed? Ugh. It's like they designed each encounter without remembering you are supposed to fight other encounters too... or have fun while playing. I'm really not sure who this game is for, or where the fun is. At the very least it seems you need to slog through 20? 30? more? hours of tedium doing runs you don't intend to win to unlock the stuff that lets you play the game. It's the worst meta progression I have ever seen in a roguelite, and this is the genre I play the most so believe me when I say I have seen some ♥♥♥♥♥♥ meta prog before. This game takes the cake, no, the whole bakery. Okay the good parts: it looks good and the narrations is good. Music is ok I guess. The token system looked interesting and I would love to see it in a good game, to give it a fair shake. As you might imagine from the wall of text, I had expectations from this game and I'm dissappointed enough to rant about it. This game is bad enough that I'm not gonna bother with anything Red Hook in the future.
Honestly it runs like crap on the steam deck. Not sure why a mostly 2d game is so poorly optimized.
I really like the game, but the relationship choice mechanics are so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ unbelievably stupid and nonsense. Why do my characters at LOW STRESS AND HIGH HEALTH want to make decisions that will only hurt my run? Costing me 30 torchlight and 2 stress for 2 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ food items vs helping at an assistance encounter for +30 torchlight and +stagecoach health feels like this literally only exists to nuke my relationship points and for no other reason. If my characters were at like 4 or 5 stress and/or low on health, sure, whatever, you could make the argument there for them to make nonsense decisions, but as it stands it's just there to inexplicably punish the player. If low torchlight had ANY benefits like DD1 then maybe you could make the argument for it, but it's just stupid instead. And I know things like it are easy to fix with inn items but it doesn't change how unbelievably dumb and forced in the choices often are. Also, why don't DoTs, especially DoTs from killing blows, apply to corpses, especially when you can still DoT corpses???
Way more balanced and approachable then DD1. I can see why the DD1 players might not like the changes but this is objectively a better designed game. Visuals are also a very juicy. UI Can be wired sometimes and it s not clear where are you supposed to click but other then that more fun then DD1.
纯正狗粑粑,和一代完全俩游戏,
It's great honestly.
1,000 hours and 100% achievements later – this is a masterpiece, not a DD1 clone!!! As someone who is about to cross the 1,000-hour milestone and has unlocked every single achievement, I felt compelled to write this. The mixed reviews on Steam are deeply unfair to what Red Hook Studios has actually accomplished here. Most negative reviews come from players who wanted "Darkest Dungeon 1.5" – managing the Hamlet, endless grinding, and disposable heroes. DD2 intentionally took a bold, completely different direction. This is a grim, deeply tactical roguelike road trip, and it executes that vision flawlessly. Why this game is a masterpiece (from a veteran's perspective): • Chess-like Combat: The token system replaces the heavy RNG and stat-bloat of the first game, turning every fight into a high-stakes puzzle. Team synergy and positioning are everything. • Heroes with Soul: Instead of sending nameless recruits to the meat grinder, you build a cohesive party. The dynamic Affinity system and character shrines give these heroes a real sense of weight and story. • Flawless Presentation: The transition to a stylized 3D art style, the combat animations, and the legendary Wayne June narrating your downfall create an unmatched atmosphere. • Incredible Endgame Content: The newer Kingdoms mode and Blood Moon difficulty offer an ultimate test of skill and long-term planning for anyone who thinks they've mastered the base game. Darkest Dungeon II is brutal, punishing, and demands that you actually sit down and learn its complex systems. If you quit after 20 hours because a run failed, you missed out on the true depth this game offers once it finally clicks. Stop listening to the nostalgia-blinded complaints. Darkest Dungeon II is its own prideful beast, and it deserves every second of your time. Highest possible recommendation.

I have played more than 1,220+ hours on Darkest Dungeons and now have ventured to playing Darkest Dungeons 2. The UI and clicks are way too fancy. You have to hold and wait for it to be click. That is so bad in a game. Why can't it be a simple click? Making it too complicated guys. Just keep it simple. Damn annoying learning or should i say guessing the clicks and require to hold.
