great
Actually a good game, despite what you've been told.
If you are interested in this game, for your own good, don't buy it. Instead: go and buy the first part, Darkest Dungeon. Darkest Dungeon II isn't a bad game. But in my opinion it doesn't have anything the original Darkest Dungeon had not. And a lot of things from the first game are missing here. This game feels as if it was the prototype during the development cycle for Darkest Dungeon. Not exactly technically, but regarding its concepts: - 3D Animations: If you weren't sure the first part did great without them, the second proofs it. They don't fall in line with the general art style, they aren't very good in particular, are only relevant in combat when the character performs its turn, don't match the turn-based-logic of the game, harm modding scene heavily and are much more expensive to produce (I assume). - Stagecoach: It must have been a great idea to imagine the game as a journey to ones own dark core. But even if you would like to implement a tree-like pathing structure, why would you put all the content (i.e. events, battles, loot, progression etc.) in the nodes and leave only empty edges to be traversed by a bored out player? Just cut out the stagecoach, make the player click the node he wants to visit like it's done in every other game (e.g. Slay the Spire, Inscryption). The game would lose nothing but dead weight from this. - Tokens, rules, mechanics: A lot of this may be a matter of taste - maybe stun was to strong, maybe arbalest and musketeer were underwhelming etc. But as I see it, the idea of tokens is a straight downgrade from the original. A token is just a (de-)buff with a name, rendering it non stackable, semi interactive and hard to read (as you have to look up the symbol, tool tips aren't helping anymore). They basically extended the "Mark"-mechanic of the first part to everything and this way make a good impression why it should be reserved for marks and nothing more. The logic of buffs and debuffs was complete: Everything that's good, is a buff. Everything that's bad, is a debuff. Now the logic falls apart, there are tokens everywhere and nothing can categorize them all by simple terms. Its tacitical depth got shallow, but its arbitrary complexity deepened a lot. - Immersion: You set out into a world that's coming apart. Got that. But why are there so many service spots on the line? Who are these brave medics, merchants, inn keepers and scholars serving? There is no road life, no civlization, nothing. just a stagecouch collecting food and grenades from rolling over bushes and occasionally crashing into obstacles or stopping at these service points in the middle of enemy infested nowhere. If only there would be a base to set out from. Where all these men and women could house and be addressed by the player when he returns from the dread, not while he is in the middle of it. At least regarding the "Confession" mode of the game (the "Kingdom" mode doesn't seem to be any different, but I havent spent a lot of time there yet), I strongly recommend to not buy this game befor you have bought and played the original Darkest Dungeon. If, and only if, you did that and you consumed all of it and are starving now for more Darkest Dungeon, reconsider Darkest Dungeon II. But be warned: It by any means can't hold up to the original.
A lot of fun! I have spent a ton of time in DD1 and lately have been playing more progression roguelikes-- this can be a bit more confusing than DD at first glance, but I really appreciate the team taking the art and story in a new direction.
